Q: Places to visit in Beijing with fewer domestic tour buses?

Every time we visit Beijing, the number and obnoxiousness of domestic bus tourists seem to grow. I'm looking for things to do around the city with our school aged boys, where we won't be mobbed by the zombie hordes. We've been to most of the tourist sites, but wouldn't mind revisiting them, as long as we won't be elbow to elbow with rude people who spit and shove us around.

In other words, where in BJ do tour groups from other provinces *not* go?

Beijing without the zombie hordes?    Might need a time machine for that, sorry.

Xiangshan Park--it is far enough away from the city to actually be nice.

The Ming tombs--Chinese talk a great deal about their ancient history, but they don't actually give a crap about the sites themselves, unless they can take selfies in front of something big and well-known. That leaves the tombs of the Ming Emperors relatively nong-free.

The art district--because, of course.

DaphneNJ:

Yes,  798 is a wonderful oasis, free of country bumpkins. There were plenty of Chinese tourists there last year, but they were not the kind with megaphone and matching caps.

Has anyone been to the police museum? It sounds interesting in a strange way. I think the National Museum is open again. We've never been. I wonder if it's on the hick bus route.
