Q: Plumbing for decoration?

What is the reason behind the pipes that run along the walls in our bathrooms and kitchens in China?

There must be a reason for it though. To save money, or time or whatever.

Apartments are built with no interior finish and so anything added needs to be put outside of the walls which are mostly masonary. The pipes that you see are mostly the heating (steam). With most bathrooms being internal (no window) there is also unfortunately the sewer pipe from upstairs running down through it as well. Just do what the locals do and wrap some lovely plastic ivy leaves or plastic bamboo around them.

Well don't having the pipes inside the walls allows construction crews to build walls cheaper and faster. On the plus side, when the pipes do break, they won't have to destroy half, if not all of, the wall to get to the broke pipe.
