Q: Pointers to getting a decent teaching position?

I am a naive English speaking American and also speak conversational Spanish as a second language.  I am seeking a Teacher position in china.  I have NO teaching experience other than 10++ in a corporate level.  I will be taking the TEFL certificate class in August 2012 then ready to leave for a position.

I have had a few interviews via skype however the offer on their posting of jobs VS what is offered to me via interview is extremely lower OR in a different city or it ends up being an agent with many other positions ......

Can someone give me some pointers to get a decent position.......in China or Twaine ??

1- Get your Z visa while in the States. Those that tell you to come in a n F visa and change it , for the most part are dishonest.

2- Middle school and elementary schools pay better, but, well, you REALLY need to love children and have more patience than Job.

3- Review the contract carefully. Some may try to "stick" you with extra teaching hours or have ridiculous rules like having to be  home before 11 pm, absolutely NO guests overnight, etc.

4- Get it in writ ting if they will or not offer you a ticket once a year to go home. Many do, some dont.

5- Ask, ask, ask. NEVER EVER assume anything. If something is important for you, like  a Western toilet, ASK. They may nor not have it.

My advice is go to a private school. State schools are too demanding for a newby, and that be what you be. A state school class could easily hold 60 students. In a private school you'll most likely have a maximum of 16.

Pay should be 'minimum' 3000 a month for 20 hours, plus accommodation, though the average seems to be twice that. I'm only talking about in the south of China here though, I can't talk for anywhere else. If you have a degree you can go to a coastal city, in which case to my understanding you should be able to command wages in the region of 10,000 or more, plus accommodation and air fares.

If you intend to teach young children I recommend bringing a large stick or some form of blunt object. Beating children is necessary to the learning process; they have this free, indomitable spirit that, when bearing witness to it, makes you believe the impossible.......makes you believe you can fly - and it is utterly essential that you break them of this!

So go forth, and make robots of our young ones!

  If you can.

(Ha, you see what i'm doing there, i'm challenging you. Giving you the challenge. Making you believe in yourself. Yeh, kill those little motherfu.............Oop, kettle's boiled. Gotta go. Good luck)

Just pick a city and you can find a job on this site...

My pick is public Uni...If you want to work evenings, weekends

and in the summer, go to a private school (and make more

money, yes) angel

mArtiAn's advice and satire is sound on every level.

However I feel the need to add that although he makes the point of the minimum monthly salary being 3000rmb, please under no circumstances, ever accept a salary anywhere near that. I understand he's not suggesting that you should but just wanted to reiterate that point for clarity.

Now, mArtiAn, about that Space Modulator!!!
