Yesterday my boss...he's more of a friend than a boss but I digress, dropped into my office unannounced and tossed 200 yuan on my desk. I asked why and he said, "last week you took a taxi to the university for two meetings." A month ago we were on our way to Harbin. He rented a car for this even though it was not a business trip. On the way he handed me an envelope with 500 yuan in it. I asked what it was for and he said, "In case of an emergency". He also paid for my hotel room. Of course I refused the money it but to no avail. At least once a week he takes me and two or three of my Chinese coworkers out for beer and dinner. He always pays. He has gone so far as to tell me that if I want to refuse classes because they are inconvenient or too late that I should simply tell him and it will be done. Last week he canceled an evening class because he didn't want me working later than 8pm. My salary arrives a few days early every month. He's killing me with kindness and sometimes I really feel guilty.
I like this topic! Thumbs up!
Yes, last year we had a bunch of students for the summer from Kyrgyzstan who studied at out university for two months.
Anyway, about two days before class was over, I was told to take them to dinner. They were not a very big group, only 14 students, so I agreed.
When I asked them what they wanted to do, they asked instead what do Chinese college students do, so I told them. They had never heard of KTV so I decided to take them to one. I also invited some of my former Chinese students to come along. In all, we were 22 people including myself.
Well, it was quite expensive PLUS taxi. However, seeing just how much FUN these kids had, made it worth it for me.
Imagine my surprise, when the very next day my boss calls me to the office and reimburses me for the ENTIRE amount AND gave me a 2,000 yuan bonus! How he found out what I had done, which KTV we went to, I will never know. He just kept shaking my hand and telling me "good job!"

Nice! I wonder if this sort of thing happens more often that we are aware of?
GuilinRaf:
I would not be surpriesd! Human nature being what it is, we often focus on the negative rather the positive. I am definitely guilty of that as well!
My boss went down on the first punch, it was awesome!
Wow, that's it, 2 experiences?
GuilinRaf:
I know! Seems to me that the Apologists and Wu Maos would JUMP at this chance!!!
I had the best experience in the world. Sometimes I suffer from generalized tonic-clonic seizure,,,, well, I had one in the office not so long ago and EVERYBODY took the Best care of me !! I mean everybody from Highest boss on down! I tell you, it reaffirmed my faith in humanity. I mean, those things leave a person feeling soooooo helpless... and to be helped like that really gave me hope again....
Hard to explain, but for those of you who have gone through life-threatening whatever and rcvd the help of those around you, you know what I am talking about.
peace out.
would never forget my first boss just as i graduated from university , i was so shy and so timid , i had no experience at all and did not know how to handle the relations with the colleagues . actually i was bullied by a old staff in the office that time . the boss really helped me a lot in many ways , otherwise i almost gave up that job .
and still we think only bad things about these people think for a moment that there are some people cares and treat us good thats enough for us because we are living in other country and stil they are good to us you got a good fortune carry on
GuilinRaf:
So, instead of complaining (which you too are doing by the way) why not share a positive story now that the question has been asked in this thread?
derek:
C'mon wajid, let's hear it. This thread is not for complaining. I'm sure you have figured that out by now.
:
my boss is my one of old friend and i really thank him for what effort he did for me because i was new and i had no experience and he always treated me like a guest and help me to figure out my problems till i became experienced and often he use to invite me to dinner at home i am thank ful to him for wht he did for me thumbs up for my boss ({ and by the i wasnt complaining i was jus trying to point out good thngs about chinese people because in my last post i saw many of ppl always cmplaining of china i was jus trying to show them tht thr are some good ppl also if thr are som bad people thts how life carry on ))
I have Bipolar and have bouts of insomnia or hypomania, which can really kill me pulling off consistent hours and early morning start times. Both my teaching job and company job have been more than flexible and forgiving in this respect. They have only been encouraging and supportive of asking for time off if anything is too rough.
I cannot say the same for an insurance company I worked for in the US. It was a lot more stringent there. Perhaps it is culture? Perhaps it is supply and demand? (probably a bit of both, but more the latter--as many Chinese have made that quite clear that if a Chinese employee did that, they wouldn't last long).
I have several. For instance, this past fall, since it was getting cold, I said that I was cold and the director paid for a down comforter. I got wireless internet (which had never been installed in the foreigner's apartment before.) I know this doesn't sound amazing, but I now have a classroom with a screen (which the last foreign teacher never got. Last semester I had to find a different room every class because my room didn't have a screen.) Of course, I have to say the best story so far was when two of my freshman classes pitched in to buy me a pair of boots for the winter. I cried. It was so sweet of them. A teacher at the school sometimes invites me to her house for dinner, which makes me feel guilty since I can't repay the favor.
Got free lunch buffet once and also got a few drinks. Back when I was in the military they closed the maintenance shop just to celebrate my birthday! Bought Cake and invited everyone to enjoy! What was special about that was that they closed the shop and this was during normal working hours in the Military!
my ex foreign boss took me to a bath house and drinking on the 2nd night which was a eye opener
steve0sha:
getting drunk in the local bars , then him saying go to bath house, i had previously went to the city about 8 months before and had 5 foot spas in 3 weeks when i was there so thought it was all the trend. But no it was a shower, a sit in a room and 3 or 4 ladies came in for you to pick.
