no biggie here... am in the medical field... people don't care much... no wonder so many psycho here on the street staring at you!!
the only thing that works well is that patients with psychological problems are loaded with medications.. so good business for antidepressants, antimania and sedatives

There is a Chinese Psychologists and Psychiatrists Association but it is still quite in its nascent stage.  The above-poster is correct in that this is quite an unknown science here for whatever reason but it maybe an Asian thing and not a Chinese thing.  When I lived in Japan and in Korean, I also noticed the same thing.  There were consulting psychologists in Japan / pschiatrists, etc,. etc. but they were quite marginalized and not at all in the mainstream.  I wonder somehow if this has to do with a Confucian ethic or something?

About three months ago, I offer my services to accompany a dear friend into a State run mental hospital for thretment of a severe depression with suicidal ideas.  It is a rule that those patients must be accompanied by a family member 24/7, and since I do not work and all in his family do, I was asked and I accepted.
There, I will say that medications are given, your chice western (mostly prosac) or chinese.  In my friend's case, it was either 300 Rmb or 6 Rmb daily for medication the cost of pills.  My observation was very little interaction on apersonal level, chats with doctors were daily, but lasted 5 to 10 minutes, and was mostly asking how you were yesterdy, any problems, and if had a good night sleep.  No digging to find cause of depression, no instructions on positive type thinking, or in recognizing early signs of a depressive state of mind coming up.  At 8 am they had physical excersices for 10 minutes, then they had to clean the area and their rooms.  Lunch at 11 am, then afternoon nap, from 3 to 5 a get together of all patients for social interaction, dinner at 5 pm, and to sleep by 9 pm.
Most of those there walked like zombies, out of this world totally.  I say fellows being discharges, and return 4 or 5 days later and be admitted again.  I also noticed a great influence of the Japanese way to deal with mental disorders while there, and a lot of books by Japanese doctors around.

And this hospital is rated as the best mental hospital in Guangxi Province.
