performance should be defined in the contract, excessively late, no lesson plans submitted on time, etc, if no definition of performance, plane ticket does not exist.

I've never seen that on any Contract, since I'm in China.

Reason might be 'no teaching history' or 'bad teaching history'.

Every School I worked in China issued me Recommendation letter in Chinese, which are apparently good, and they are all included to my CV.

Usually, Contract state School can terminate it, if FT is sick continuously longer than 30 days.

I guess, OP is asking 'after the fact'. We had OP's 'performance' related posts two months ago.

Probably, School is refusing refund/ticket money.

What do they mean by "good performance"? Ask them to clarify this, if they refuse don't sign with them. If "performance" is not clearly defined you can be almost sure that they will use any excuse to not pay your return flight.

Otherwise public schools are mostly crap, but good places to find low hours teaching jobs and make a lot of money aside by giving private lessons.

The truth is , they are planning to screw you. Flight reimbursement should not be tied to performance period.

They need to define that "performance" for sure. Otherwise you are on the short edge of the stick.

Flight reimbursement is usually a standard feature of a year long contract.

get everything defined clearly - any fuzzy areas leaves it open to their interpretation.

i always have a check list of things that need to be outlined clearly in the contract

An idol threat. The last teacher was probably a bum.

You should have nothing to worry about anyway though, eh?

You would still want clarification on it though, is there a monthly point system? How is it rated? Are they going to make you live in agony for 10 months not knowing?

If your performance is bad then they will want to let you go. On the other hand they want to save face in the eyes of the parents who paid a larger sum for there kids to go to your class. So instead of firing you they want to save money by withholding your airfare.  You are really at there mercy. All of us are. The contracts are no worth anything. Just the same though. I agree with the others  here; get clarification and some kind of warning system to let them know you are going to do your best.

If you leave job on 'not so good terms', they can say anything. Just get another job, and move on.
