Q: Putting on make-up, in a coffee shop, for 2 hours?!
I have observed women doing this several times over the past few weeks, is this normal behavior , or are women in Nanjing just weird?
I'm married to a Nanjing woman, she never put make-up (thanks Zeus/God/Buddah/Allah/Shiva) and she doesn't like coffee. Her friends are not like that either. So there, fixed-up that for you, it's not a Nanjing thing ^^
I think she's trying to get attention. My GFis a professional makeup artist. The only makeup she used was eyebrow pencil. I asked her to sometimes use mascre and eye liner, she said that would make her eyes look too dark.
Some women do it, some just don't. Some women do it when they are on the bus, taxi but I've seen one that beats the rest...she was putting on make up while riding pillion on a motorbike! And she was sitting sideways like most women do. So, I suppose it depends on women themselves where they want to put on make up. If they are in a hurry then I suppose anywhere would do.

Attention ploy I say. Remember the old tactic of girls going to coffee shops to hook up with richer men? That is at least 3 years outdated now... But I think if we recall that type of trend from a few years ago, it will help figure out what's going on in this situation. Why didn't you go up to her and socialize? If this were taking place on the internet, her makeup slathering is basically akin to sending you a " 
" waiting for you to start something.

...or perhaps it's an advertising tactic sponsoring a certain product or perhaps a way of 'attracting/inviting' customers to their beauty salon.
I used to play with a girl who went to a broadcasting/Media college in Nanjing. She was smoking hot. Easily the hottest girl I've been involved with here. I visited her school once or twice and I noticed (to my delight) most of the girls there were also superbabes. Anyways, one morning she was putting on makeup, which was unusual for her. After about 45 minutes, i lost my patience because I was late for checkout and left. Later I severely scolded her because I had to pay an exorbitant extra late checkout fee because of her 90 min.makeup session. She told me about a makeup culture among the girls in Nanjing. Nanjing girls have an unusual compulsion about makeup and she felt pressure to fit in. I dated one of her classmates a year later and she told me the almost exact same thing. She is not from Nanjing, but many Nanjing girls are obsessed. Never seen anything in a coffee shop, though.

Yeah, and if you ask around, 90% of random tier cities round belly dudes will tell you their shithole of a place has a century old of drinking beer KTV "culture". See where this is going?

umm, I'm afraid I dont know where you're going. Are you taking exception to my use of the world culture? It's not the word she used but it's the best way I can translate what she explained to me. Anyways, culture can be used to explain practices or rituals among a subgroup of people, such as "The Google office culture".

Chinese always try to justify any obnoxious behavior they have with the culture card (and derivations).
I mean, seriously, where in the world would anyone even try to justify making up for hours by saying "oh, but this is how we all roll here" with a straight face.
