Q: Q2 visa question

I recently applied for a visa to come visit my wife, I was told by the visa agency that I would still get an L visa, but when it showed up I got a Q2, with a 90 day stay unlimited entries. Since I have never had one I have a couple of questions. Can this visa be extended in China? Can that be done at the PSB in a tier 4 city ? If yes, how many times and for how long can it be extended? I had only planned to come for 90 days , but now my plans are more flexible, so what are my options? Thanks

The Q-2 visa works like the former L visa, but is given (among others) to those foreigners married to Chinese nationals living abroad. That is the new regulation for visas properly applied.

Once in China, you will have about three alternatives if you wish to stay more than 90 days:

1.- a quick trip over the border. You exit China, enter a border country (Hong Kong and Macau included), stay 5 seconds and turn around and re-enter China. That will give you another 90 days automatically.

2.- Go to local PSB and request a 30 days stay extension (no more than 30 days given per request), you have the right for two of them on each entry. WILL NEED TO SHOW Temporary Residence notification form issued by local Police nearest to your place of stay, and may need to prove econoimic solvence ( 1000 to 2000 Rmb per day extra requested, either in cash or deposited to your name at local banks.

3.- Since you are married to a local Chinese national, ask PSB for a Residence Permit. If granted, it will take the place of your visa, give you a 1 to 2 years stay, Do not forget to insist in multiple entries also, that will allow you to exit and come back as you wish. The problem may be to renew it at expiration, you must prove to them than you were in China 9 months out of one calendar year.

Hotwater: he already has a Q-2 visa, and wants to stay longer than the 90 days granted. Do you realize that in order to apply for an S-1 visa he will have to return to USA?. Besides, an S-1 visa and the corresponding “residence permit for private affairs” are for family members of a foreign national working or studying in China, and the applicant’s intended duration of stay must be more than 180 days. •Only certain “family members” of foreign nationals working or studying in China may apply: you must be the worker or student’s spouse, parent, son or daughter under the age of 18, or parent-in-law. •If your intended duration of stay is under 180 days, you don’t qualify for an S1 visa or residence permit for private affairs. I do not see how your answer can help "ou812". Maybe you can teach me a new thing if you elaborate further, please.
