Q: Question about Z Visa in Hong Kong (help!)

I just got a new job and after a few weeks of running around doing medical tests and the like, I got all of my paperwork back with the medical results, work permit etc. The next step is to go to Hong Kong to apply for a Z Visa. Here's were I have a few questions:

1) On the work permit (工作许可证), it says that my contract (one year) starts October 10. Is it going to be a problem if I go down to Hong Kong on October 22 to apply for the Z visa? I searched all over but could find nothing specifying how much time you have between obtaining the work permit to apply for your Z visa.

2) I am planning on flying directly to England from Hong Kong AFTER I get my z visa back (waiting around in HK for 3-4 days for processing) and BEFORE I return to China. Is this going to be a problem trying to get back in to China? Once again, I am unsure whether there are time limits on this, or if its going to look weird that I visited several other countries before returning to China. Would it make any difference if I went to England first then Hong Kong then China, or is it not a big deal either way?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any help is much appreciated!

1. First, you must sign the Contract. Then, your employer get all documents for Z ready, and you can go to HK and apply for Z.

You will apply for Z in HK later then you signed the Contract.

2. Z visa is issued with 90 days time to enter China.  Z stamp in your passport looks like this:

- Category:        Z

- Enter before: 07Dec2012

- Issue date:    07Sep2012

- Full name:

- Birth date:

When you enter China, Police will make pen mark on your Z stamp, and give you an entry stamp with the date you entered. You have 30 days from the 'entry date' to get Residence Permit.

Hi icnif77, thanks for your response. I have my contract signed and everything is ready to go, waiting on me to go to HK to get the Z visa. I was more concerned about when I needed to get down to HK to handle the actual Z visa by. All of my materials were finalized and given back to me (to go down to HK) at the end of September. My question is: does it matter if I choose to go down there 3 weeks from now (Oct 22), even though according to my "work permit/alien work license" my contract starts on Oct 10? Also, any idea on the whole "not going directly back to China" situation? Thanks again!

icnif77:

No, it doesn't matter if you go to HK 3 or 7 weeks after documents for Z are ready.

You must enter China in 90 days from the date Z was issued.

You don't need to go back to China from HK. You can go anywhere you want for 90 days. You must 'enter (China) before' the date on Z stamp in your passport!
