Q: A question for kindergarten teachers

Do you have a consistent part time teaching 4-6 year olds?  This may apply to you.

The question I have is, how do you handle the kids, parents, and owners of the 'center' with the following situation:

Expectations of Parents & Owner
-My kid walks out speaking an entire sentence on his own without prompting or encouragement

-He learned this sentence despite the fact he rolls around, kicks the teacher, says "No" and only gets involved when in the first 2 minutes of every game or activity before going back to the aforementioned.

-The teacher should have the ability to make the kid follow instructions and be actively involved the WHOLE HOUR while the parent smiles benignly at their kid acting like a clown, saying nothing at all about consequences at home.
-The owner constantly asks what you are going to do the next class throughout the week despite you providing a consistent curriculum for them to look at.

I had problems like this years ago. In China I find that kids with nannies, grandparents make kids more naughty if they are the ones caring for these kids 70% of the time. When I have parents ask me to teach their kids part time I give the child an evaluation test for English levels and abilities and such, but I mostly look for his behavior first.

So I am very frank now and honest with parents when I tell them: I understand you are worried about your childs education but I can't teach him/her, he or she isn't ready yet to focus or retain the lessons during class. I tell parents focus on mastering study habits with their kids before hiring tutors.

But I hear where you are coming from, it is like ripping off parents money when kids are actually not learning anything from the class or just learning 5%. due to their up bringing or just being a hyper active kid.

But if this is happening at your Part time job, in a company, than just do what the boss tells you to do, you are getting paid for your effort, at least you tried.

Exactly why I don't teach children!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Especially at training schools!

ironman510:

haha, and Never work for EF Childrens training center, its a marketing show that drove my friend Alex and his wife out the door, it was so funny. There is a Wall Street English in the same building as the EF Training center and we usually ate lunch with the EF teachers trading lovely & horrifying stories about work and they said: Well thats it, we have had it with EF! We are walking out on the job after lunch and I said wait wait wait, what about your release letters? They said: We don't care about working in China again, we're moving to work in Dubia, EF is a nightmare, due to the marketing way they make us teach kids, the kids can only be naughty because there's nothing really to teach them.  ( So thats why they post so many ads on Daves ESL Cafe. lol)  So we hugged and shook hands said good bye and they let us stand by the front door to watch them walkout of EF. It was Fun ( Yeah we got a talking to from our boss that we shouldn't be in front of EF during moments like that because we are Wall street guys.)

@Ironman: Really? How can one get a job in Dubai? Can you suggest any links, qualifications etc. I have a BA in English lit as well as a TEFL certificate. I've got four years' teaching experience. No teaching certificate.

@loudvillager, I'm not sure if a BA/BS degree is enough, they have high standards, the couple that left EF had masters degree in different fields, so that made it easier for them, but they gave the site for you to try: job4u.ae

My daughter goes to a state Kindegarten.  I wont go into the shit we went through to get her into it.... that is covered in my hysterical rantings that are a historical record on this fine forum.

Last week, they invited parents to come help with a cooking class. I asked  (via my wife), if I could bring my camera kit and take some photographs.

What a school. Fantastic facilities.  The teacher, a young guy, had full control at all times.

But alas, my daughter's English is not very good. Probably because mine is not very good too. Scottish speak a strange version of English.

So, I have been thinking, should I send my daughter to English lessons?

I think I will.

My daughter knows the English words, she is effectiviley bilingual, but when she speaks English, on the bus for example, she is instantly met with laughter and derision from non English speakers. So she shuts up. And speaks Mandarin or Cantonese.

Now, I am lucky in that I work in a company where the Chinese managers speak fluent English. My daughter meets Chinese who speak English fluently.  But she is shy from speaking English it in front of them. I am trying to work out why,

I ramble on a bit, but I think the basic issue is that non English speaking parents pay for English lessons, then parade their kids as if they were performing seals.

I see it all the time. Grandparents sitting outside the language mills, the kids inside. The grandparents chattering in Cantonese, about how their rich kids will pay for the magic of English to be embossed into their grandkids.

The reality of course, is that  the 3 generations should be in the classroom.  Learning together.

If they leave the classroom together, they have something in common.

If the parents wait outside for the delivery of their educated offspring... well

my son goes to the same kindergarten where I work,

My boy is smart he picks up things very easy, but when the class is having lessons he does not listen to the teacher.

he does not get involved with the class much when they are doing activities.he likes to play with toys and pretending to be a doctor or a fire fighter.

The only class he listens in is Maxs class he is the English teacher.

The teachers dont know what to do with him.

Iam not allowed to say anything or do anything because I work at the kindergarten.

sometimes I get the feeling he is very bored
