Q: Question regarding gas station etiquete

Are the attendants bluffing or must I, after refueling, really walk my motorbike away from the fuel station before restarting the engine?

What province ? I've never seen this down here.

I did recently see a dude push his breadvan into the gas station but that is probably not by command of the all mighty Gas Emperors.

This is in Shandong.

I can explain this... and it has to again do with idiotic Chinese mentality.

1) They do this because I believe a few low grade motorcycles exploded after being refueled, or because the people pouring it would miss the mark and it would trickle down to the hot engine area... and explode when started (ridiculous I know). When the  attendant told me, I laughed in her face and told her... Canadians don't blow up their motorcycles when they go to gas stations... go figure...

2) Most of the times you are not even allowed near the gas pumps because you have a motorcycle. Therefore you are not rich or good enough to buy a car. So you get second class service (kind of like how they don't raise the gates for motorcycles in many residential security stations). Motorcycles were used in China out of necessity and not recreational... so they don't see motorcycles like people do in the West.

It is starting to change with the younger people that are buying the "cool" motorcycles however.

Out here where I live all the passengers in the car have to get out before entering the refuelling area and walk away...50 metres...sometimes 100 metres away.  Even in the middle of winter when the snow is thick on the ground.

The reason is so they don't blow themselves up.  Somebody must have done that once.

For the same idiotic reasons the clock tower in the middle of town is banned because some unfortunate threw themselves off it one day and the reservoir picnic area is fenced off so as to prevent non swimmers drowning themselves when they're pissed on baijiu.

These people do stupid things and then employ stupid responses to them.

As Forrest always says "stupid is as stupid does"

Because the quality when Chinese do anything is so awful. Poor quality motorcycles and cars. And carelessness when refueling. Instead of addressing the issues of their behavior they simply work around it.

This why China will never progress.
