Q: Racism - What it is and what it aint.

I think the "R" word is getting thrown around carelessly lately and I don't want our Chinese friends to get the wrong idea, so.  I'm starting a primer on racism so everyone is on the same page.  Most of you know I am African American so I hate racism as much as the next guy.  I know the concept is a little complicated but this is getting crazy!  Let's start with the definition, shall we?  Of course this is open to everyone's contributions.

Noun

  1. The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as...
  2. Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.

Now that we know our definitions, we can see that disparaging remarks said about certain members of a particular race can't be rightly called racism.  I have never heard comments here stating ABC people defecating in the streets or cutting queue.  This forum is directed mostly at the mainland.  If I think you and your wife have bad breath, does that mean I also think your cousin in Virginia also has bad breath?  Of course we want to comment responsibly when we can, but I really don't see much true racism here.  I see shock and awe of a people with an undeveloped culture.

P.S. ABC means American born Chinese.

As so many here are Americans I'll use the Merriam Webster dictionary.

First Racism

1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce in inherent superiority of a particular race

2: racial prejudice or discrimination

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism

So lets look at 'race'

1: a breeding stock of animals

2 a: a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock

b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/race

You will I hope have noted the word 'prejudice' in the entry for racism, so lets look at 'prejudice'.

2 a (1): preconceived judgment or opinion (2): an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge

b: an instance of such judgment or opinion

c: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race or their supposed characteristics

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/prejudice

I think 2c is particularly noteworthy for many on this forum.

However lets move on to 'generalisation'.

1 [count]: a general statement: a statement about a group of people or things that is based on only a few people or things in that group

2 [noncount] : the act or process of forming opinions that are based on a small amount of information

http://www.learnersdictionary.com/search/generalization

So I think it's clear, if you generalise about an entire race you are at the least being inaccurate and if that generalisation shows prejudice then you are indeed being racist. Oh and please before you start harping on about Chinese or mainland Chinese or any other portion not being a 'race' look at the definition of race.

2 a: a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock

b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics

[my bold]

xinyuren:

So me and my RC club members are of the same race? What race might we be? LOL,  I didn't know that.  I need to get us listed in the directory of races.  Really, I rarely hear someone here say that all Chinese people everywhere are dishonest.  That would truly be racist.

BTW,. usually people who don't have a good argument fill up the page with web-links.  I don't really have time to read all that stuff.  Maybe someone else has. edit - I took the time. prejudice is not racism. being prejudice because you think all people of a race are a certain way, is. You still haven't learned context and situation.... You have the facts, but you don't know how to use them.

Another edit: (this is fun) by your own chosen definition of racism, every disparaging remark or prejudice against any family in the world is racism. You should stop "reasoning". You're really digging a big hole for yourself.

Xinyuren, you are being so consistently ignorant and refusing to acknowledge the FACTS I have put in front of you I can only start to imagine why.

I have never said a disparaging remark is racist. What I have said, and the evidence from the foremost American dictionary I have quoted above backs me up, is if you make a remark that indicates or infers a superiority of yourself over a whole race (as defined above) then you are being racist!

It isn't Hugh G Rection's racial handbook, it is the dictionary that defines American English. Don't like that? Then choose another language!

xinyuren:

First of all, I have acknowledged your facts and told you that you have misapplied them.  Secondly, you really should look into that reading comprehension thing.  Let me show you a couple of quotes:

"I don't really have time to read all that stuff."

This is what you bothered to read.

"edit - I took the time."

This is what you failed to read, thus you wasted page space scolding me for something when in fact you were the ignorant one.  (ironic, isn't it?) The fact that I made comments in reply to your little handbook should have told you that I read it.  Oh, well.  Ignorance has no bounds.

Ok, I've had enough fun with you.  Since you still haven't comprehended my point, I will break it down for you.

First, the definition you have chosen for race is problematic.  In the context of this issue, it does not apply.  "Your" definition (def. 2b) is so esoteric and wide open that it leaves room for most any group, club, or homogenous family to be labled a race (since they all meet the requirements in def. 2b).  In this context, that is simply ridiculous.  A school chess club shouldn't be considered a "race" (in this context).  The Williams family, a race?  nonsense!  So, while you understand the definition of racism correctly, under your definition of race, almost every group that is maligned, abused, or desecrated can be a victim of racism.  No wonder you're throwing that word out so easily. I bet you see racism everywhere!

In reality (ours, not yours), very few people on this form has exhibited racism.  Here is another quote.  This time from your words:

They' spit,

'They' eat with their mouths open,

'They' shout,

'They' don't shave their armpits,

'They' are liars,

'They' are cheats,

'They' publicly urinate and defecate

'They' are racist". "... it was the word 'they' it is the sweeping generalisations that infer an underlying racism:" These generalizations are not about the whole race of Chinese. The only way they can be considered to be against a whole race is if we use your esoteric, inappropriate definition of race (def. 2b) If you don't believe me, Let's do a poll and ask members in this forum about object of their disparaging remarks. We are fellow forum members here living in China. We know who everyone is talking about (with the exception of you, apparently). Once again, there are very few racist comments coming from this forum. In fact, the most noteworthy racist comment I can remember was not even against the Chinese Finally, about my ignorance (since you seem to enjoy throwing that term around). I am ignorant about many things, but I do know a few things: I know the definition of Xenophobia, which you don't judging by your comments (Why would a xenophobic person come to China anyways?) I know the definition of race, which you are wildly inaccurate in this measure. And I know when someone is being racist, which you have no clue. So my fun is done and you have been schooled. I recommend that you not be so quick to label people as racist or xenophobic based on generalizations they have made. Everybody makes generalizations from time to time. I really don't appreciate the inference. I can't get this comment to format correctly. Please read carefully this time!

Xinyuren, all you have to do to answer your question (is your family a 'race') is to read, just to prevent you from getting too tired by all the scrolling up I will repost it here.

So lets look at 'race'

1: a breeding stock of animals

2 a: a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock

b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/race

If they fit any of those definitions yes they are, if they don't then no they are not. However before you post that your family is a race and try and ridicule YOUR dictionary  may I suggest you first look up the word 'family' in the same dictionary, I think you will find that there are differing definitions of that word too, and it is YOU who are in danger of using the wrong ones.

You can only misapply a dictionary definition by using the wrong one (definition). You cannot pick the appropriate one for the case you are using and then say but that doesn't apply to me or this case. THAT is preposterous and shows YOUR lack of ability.

ok, to be very clear in very elementary terms for you,  In the context of racial prejudice,  you cannot separate mainland China from the rest of the Chinese in the world.  Such an attitude against mainland Chinese people is called prejudice based on nationalism, not race.  It is by being prejudice of Chinese everywhere, that one can be considered racist.  There.  That is the precise definition of racism in this forum.  Racism is not commonly practiced in this forum and neither do a significant portion of forum members display xenophobia. I resent that inference so please refrain from throwing words around you don't fully understand..

Hugh.G.Rection:

I honestly don't understand what you are trying to do. Are you seriously saying you don't accept the definition of race as laid down by Merriam-websters?

Let's look again.

2 a: a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock

b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics [my bold]

unified by shared interests, habits etc, I would argue would mean you can

"separate mainland China from the rest of the Chinese in the world."

Now I probably agree with you that we shouldn't but many people do differentiate between the two (some of them on this very site) and according to YOUR dictionary (assuming you are American, if you are not my apologies) then they constitute a race as the obviously have distinctly different shared habits and interests.

However, let's broaden our search, let's look at The Oxford Dictionary to see if they say the same.

each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics: people of all races colours, and creeds.

[mass noun] the fact or condition of belonging to a racial division or group; the qualities or characteristics associated with this.

a group of people sharing the same culture, history, language, etc.; an ethnic group: we Scots were a bloodthirsty race then.

http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/race--2]

Oops sorry no, the main authoritative British English dictionary seems to agree with the American equivalent, i.e. if you can say the Scots are distinct (say from the English) then I'm sure you can say the mainland Chinese are or can be classified as distinct.

So it would appear the only dictionary that agrees with you is the dictionary according to xinyuren, could you point me to where it was published and by whom, and of course the credentials of the author?

If you (or anyone else) states, infers or implies that they (or their race) is superior to another race of people (as defined many times here in this thread and included MAINLAND Chinese (just read the defintions I have provided) then they are racist and I am of the opinion that you fall fully into that category, if for no other reason than your extended erroneous attempts to refute published definitions.

I never denied the authenticity of that definition.  I have always insisted you are applying it wrong. If i denigrate only a few chinese and not all of them, how can I be considered racist? I am only talking about a particular few. I am fine with the rest.  Regarding your quote from the Scotsman, i have no argument with it.  All Scottish all over the earth, even American Scottish belong to the same race.  So?  What of it?  You have not furthered your argument an iota.  Now please answer my question.  I know why you can't answer it:  If someone wrongly characterizes or persecutes my family or my school glee club just because they are my family or they are from my glee club, can I accuse them of being racist?  You have to answer yes, or your whole argument is worthless.  You already gave your definition in bold letters.  It is an accurate definition, but it is the wrong definition for this argument.  So what is your answer?

I can't even say I'm from the American race.  They would laugh me out of court.  Just like I'm laughing right now at your comments. And that is the crux of your error. When it comes to racism, it's not about following the exact letter of the definition you choose in the dictionary. It's about what is commonly recognized as race in this situation.

Firstly, I have provided evidence for my postion, I have backed up my claims with the  pre-eminent authorites in the two major versions of the English Language. All you have done is state strawman arguments and personal opinions that expose your views on racism more eloquently than I ever could, but I state again, you have provided not one single piece of evidence to back your claims. Therefore you are just talking hot air.

Now I'll be kind to you, (although I don't know why I should) but why is your position so different from that of the dictionaries? Well, perhaps because 10 years ago your position was factual, but language evolves it develops and you obviously haven't kept up to date. 10 years ago racist hid behind the 'fact' that the Chinese (or any nationality) weren't a race and so they could freely be racist against them, then most decent people saw this as morally repugnant and so the language (and the dictionary definitions) changed. It would appear you are still living in the past.

As to the votes down, I would hardly say 5 for and 8 against is voted into oblivion, however, on this site I take that as a badge of honour as this forum is riddled with racists, both closet ones, open ones and ones such as I suspect you are who are just uneducated ones (who will admit to national prejudice but not racism when in todays language that is the same thing).

The same definition that you use to support that mainland China is it's own race, I have used to support that my family is it's own race.  Where is the straw man?  I knew you couldn't answer it.  Nobody would ever call a club a race of people.  So it seems you only agree with half of the definition? The fact is, in certain circumstances, my family can be considered a race. Even a class of geeks can in certain circumstances! But not in situation where someone is claiming racist! You seem it is a all encompassing definition.  And that's your evidence?  You have nothing to contribute to this topic.  You see phantom racists because everyone is conscious of the obvious fact:  China is in a cultural dark age.  It is not racist to point that out.  But since you think you're among a bunch of racists here, I see only one reason why you continue to return.no

P.S.   Just for kicks and giggles, I decided to google "race".  I typed "define race" in the google box.  Here is the result:

Noun
1. A competition between runners, horses, vehicles, boats, etc., to see which is the fastest in covering a set course.
2. Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics

Do you see def. 2 there?  THAT is the common definiton of race and the appropriate one for the context of this discussion. Did you see how easy I found an alternative definition?  It was as simple as pie. It doesn't nullify the definition you presented, but clearly (from the rest of the world's view) it is the appropriate definition for this discussion. Otherwise, the world would be full of racial discrimination lawsuits coming from families, clubs, best friends, and so on. AND

2 a: a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock

b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics

“ (...) Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.“

So, since i am mixed from Asian grandfathers, Caucasian and Black grandmothers, i can therefore not be a racist if i make racial comments on people of those three races

xinyuren:

Once again, "racial comments" do not make someone racist.  A racist might use the "N" word.  But what if it is a black person using the same word?  What if it is a white guy who grew up in a black neighborhood?  What if it is a black guy using the word against a white guy (it often happens)?   It's all about situation and context.  You are not the same race as your grandfathers or grandmothers.  Your race is the one in which you personally most identify with, but If your prejudice isn't for racial reasons, then you can't be considered racist.

xinyuren,

A lotta people around here use the "n" word, and not even for racist reasons. Some do, but a lot don't. Most of us are minorities/black/indians/whatever. I can use it with my black friends (and only them, others may get the wrong idea), and they're always referring to me as an "n word." "Hey, my red n word," etc. (I'm only half white).

But actual racism drives me up the wall. I cannot stand it. People who hate others for their skin color are deranged nutbags. I don't buy into anything other than the "human race," anyway. We're all human no matter what anyone says.

Um, when I was a teenager I also identified myself as an African American because my idols were all African Americans laugh Alicia Keys, Erykah, Chuck D.

Racism is when someone makes an assumption based on a someone else's racial background. For example, you have one bad experience with an Asian boyfriend's family, it would be racist to refuse to talk to all other Asian men in the future. It wouldn't be racist to say that in Chinese culture women are baby-making machines, because that's what the culture is like.

Racism is defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called racesand that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior, or superior. So if you are like me and like Chinese women (or men for others), then you are a racist. It doesn't have to be a negative ideal.

sam239:

It's scientifically established that humanity is divided into genetically distinct groups called "races". See Lewontin 1972. Going from there to blanket statements about individuals based on their race is what's problematic. Different races have different overall characteristics (that view is scientifically founded), but people's character should ultimately be judged on how they (as individuals) behave, not their race.

All living humans belong to the same species, Homo sapiens. Since the second half of the 20th century the associations of race with the ideologies and theories that grew out of the work of 19th century anthropologists and physiologists has led to the use of the word race itself becoming problematic. Although still used in general contexts, it is now often replaced by other words which are less ambiguous and emotionally charged, such as populations, people(s), ethnic groups or communities depending on context.

Science can not prove the existence of race, genes vary between people. If we were really that different, we could not breed together. You can breed a lion and a tiger, but the off spring are sterile.

So you don't like women?

TedBayer is right.  There is no scientific backing for races.  It is a social label.   Genetically we are as much the same as a red Mustang GT is with a blue one. (I miss Detroit).

A lot of interesting points of view but I am sure we all know what sort of a person a racist is. Can I use this answer to create another question without starting a new thread?

Is a government being racist when they provide special schools and grants and whatever to a particular people? For example, in Australia there are specific schools and educational institutions that cater SOLELY for aboriginals, the indigenous people of our country. Also a host of stuff that IS NOT available to the rest of the population. You have to be able to prove that you have at least 1/8 or 1/16 Aboriginal blood to qualify for these things.

Maybe somebody can explain that to me. I'm no longer sure.

On another point: When I am in the Philippines or Thailand as a non-national I am charged (or charged more) to enter public gardens and places. I have different rules applied to me here in China as well as other countries I have been to. Apart from the Aborigines we don't practise that form of differentiation in our country.

So do countries who have rules against racism not practise what they preach?

crimochina:

that is different. the govt does that as reparations for stealing the land. same with some things in the states with regards to native americans. i do not know the history of aus with regards to to the aboriginies. but in the states native americans were almost rendered extinct. so that is not racist (taking actions to repair the damage that was done.)

Daqing is that racist? I would say yes, but then I'm not known for sitting on the fence on this issue. However, in the strict definition of the word as I have quoted in my reply above no it is not as it is not stating a believe that one race is superior to another. Although that of course could be argued from the need for one race to be given things that another doesn't need.

Does your government feel they "owe" the aboriginals anything, like what was mentioned by crimo about the American Indians?   If that is the case, I do not consider it racism. To my knowledge, Indigenous people are the first to suffer when a country starts to develop.  They are the true victims of racism and a country should do their best to make things right.  I don't know Australian history, but I can't believe the Aboriginals had it easy when the English started coming.

Yeah but crimo if they were making reparations to the actual individuals who were done wrong, that would be fair. The fact that they're giving reparations to people who happen to have the same race as those who were done wrong is in fact racist. Even though it's racist, it probably makes sense in this case. It would make sense for the Japanese to make reparations to Chinese people, for instance.

sam: legally if an estate or govt wronged a person and the surviving relatives are identifiable the estate / govt  can be forced to pay. no one complained when this happened with germany and the jews. and all of the native americans were wronged!

I agree with Daqing.  It is easy to see who is and isn't a racist (for most of us at least).  I admit I was a little indulgent in starting this thread.  It was mainly to school Hugh and others about the proper use of words. Anyways, we can let this thread die.

Edit - trying not to be too harsh with my words.

Ok Xinyuren now we can add hypocrisy to your race issues. You said:

"You've provided no evidence. You've misunderstood words, misread comments, and made wild accusations, but no real evidence  You've provided a definition, just data."

In an attempt to refute my points, and then you say

"Since you claim your source is more worthy than mine,  I will use yours."

So which is it to be? Is my evidence evidence or not, it it is not then neither is yours, if it is then perhaps I can answer your subsequent point namely

"wait wait wait..... your definition tells you how to correctly use the word in a way that backs up your claim???? Where? That would be real evidence! Quotes please!"

Then answer to which is here:

"a group of people sharing the same culture, history, language, etc.; an ethnic group: we Scots were a bloodthirsty race then."

http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/race--2]

The bit in italics "we Scots were a bloodthirsty race then." is an example provided by The Oxford Dictionary (you will note unlike you I have provided links to back up my claim) informs us how to use it and if 'we Scots' can be regarded as a race I am certain mainland Chinese can.

You see dictionaries also tell you HOW to use words as well as what they mean. You should try reading them more often they are really educational and keep you up to date with the language, rather than trusting to what you were force-fed many decades ago.

Samsara:

It doesn't matter if you call them a race or not.

The crass behaviour we see is a result of their society, not their ethnicity.

Just drop it.

Ethnic slur is a better terminology instead of "racism" in that scots example.

What about "Mainland scots?"   Geo-Ethnic slur?
