Q: Rape Crisis Centers a feasible idea in China?

In the states, we have Rape Crisis Centers that assist victims with counseling, medical treatment, reporting, and in some cases, a court case. These centers do everything to support victims in the aftermath, and are very successful. They also work to educate the community about rape, how to protect yourself, what to do if you are, and the effects of rape. They've been a huge part of the changes in the way a rape victim is perceived.

What are your thoughts about starting them in the bigger cities in China? Would they be received by the community? Would they get financial support from the community? Would they be shunned or shut down by the govt?

Of course there is room for such counseling services, but with abuse it would have to be incredibly discreet as it is still such a delicate subject in China.

A Chinese friend of mine intends to start such an organization herself, but it takes money and funding, and that's where the problem lies, for in a patriarchal society the money lies in the hands of the men, and when Chinese ignorance abounds to such a degree as it does regarding the subject of sexual abuse (sorry, I just don't know of any 'nice' way to put that), such funding is not forthcoming when a hardheaded man is at the helm.

As for the government shunning or shutting them down, I wouldn't be suprised if the government prefered to take its usual stance of ignoring the subject, rather than admitting that all was not perfect in the middle kingdom.

interesting point  hugger of the pandas i think there are two things that come into play. one providing a proper understanding of what is rape.  two government involvement what level should it be on. though good point.

I don't believe defining rape is the ultimate issue here, JulioATeachYaya. It's assisting victims of rape/assault, sexual abuse/molestion etc. Getting them proper counseling and after care and medical assistance.

Jíliú.hé:

hmmm lets see if you can help rape victim if they don't come in because they can not  figure out if they where raped or not, if you know anything about rape you would know that the victim often blames them self's, so yes it is always a big problem trying to get them to emit what happened to them and get help. so in a country like china it is a big hurdle to overcome. i have know people who took years to stop blaming them selves and get help so get a clue panda.

it will conflict with chinese culture. face dictates that this type of thing should be hush hush. sadly families tend to blame the female in situations of rape. they claim she seduced the guy or was wearing certain clothes.

in situations when a girl is attacked on campus by a non student. the school would want to down play the incident. some schools send rape victims abroad to finish their education. this is according to some students .

but abuse counseling can work as a hotline or qq group. if you set up an office people might not go. because others would closely observe who goes in and out and then spread rumors.

sexual assault is a big problem here but it is largely ignored.

it is is sad to come across a student that you believe was abused but you know there is nothing that can be done about it

HugAPanda:

I get that it's a face issue, it was that way in the states not to long ago. It's taken work and education to change it in other parts of the world. Only about 1/4 of victims report in the states, even now. I didn't report it officially for almost 20 years. It's scary as shit, especially if you know your assailant, or if he/she is a family member.

It's truly sad. But just like everywhere else around the world, it has to start somewhere.

Thanks Crimo :) I appreciate your answer, always.
