Q: Is recycling cans and bottles common in China?

I've never seen a recycling center/shop.

I've never seen the people in my apartment separate the garbage (ie. recyclables vs non-recyclables).

What is the deposit return on such items?

Curious.

Yes, it's common. People generally don't separate but as soon as the bag hits the street there will be someone going through it for recyclables. No idea what the deposit return is but it's obviously enough to make it worth doing for some people.

Thats true, probably because labor cost is still relatively cheap in China, we can afford to put someone to man the garbage station. Some stations are stricter than others. Once I was stopped dumping unsorted rubbish by an old folk, who gave me a good lecture on sorting it out. What is a deposit return anyway? How does it work?

I assume OP is asking how much the recyclables are worth. You probably take in a load of cans, plastics etc and get paid by the jin.

My parenets used to collect and trade recyclables to the street roaming garbage collectors. They would negotiate a price based on the weight! I didn't know the exact price but it was cheap for sure!

Nowadays young people like us don't do that any more, just leave it at the garbage station, sorted or unsorted. I still see garbage collectors in 3rd-tier cities, I believe they become less even there.
