Q: Registering with the police while living with friends

So, some friends invited me to stay at their home for 1 month in China and I would like to know what documents I need to bring to the Police Station to register once I arrive there. My friends own their home.

You could get detailed answer at any Public Security Bureau. No other documents, but your passport, me thinks.

If you're not in China yet, just ask your friends to got to PSB for advice.

If you are not staying in an Hotel approved for foreigners you will need to register with the local police station. They will give you a temporary residence registration paper.

You need your passport with a valid visa for the length of your stay.

If your friends are Chinese Nationals, they will need their ID, their "right of residence" card if they are living and working in a different provence than their Houkou, and their house ownership or rental book.

If they are foreigners they need the house ownership or rental book, and their passport with valid visa.

Be aware, it is possible though very unlikely, that the local police can refuse you registration if they think the neighbourhood is not suitable for a foreigner.  The official line is that foreigners are supposed to live in approved hotels or gated communities with security.

Have fun Smile

ScotsAlan:

I forgot to mention: you will need a passport photo too.

Basically, if you are coming to China just make sure you have photocopies of your passport and visa and bring any spare passport photos you have.

Forgot something else.

You will need a photocopy of the passport page with your most up to date entry into China stamp.

They want to make sure you entered the country legally.

And also a photocopy of your current visa. These copies should be separate, one page for visa, one for the page of your passport where your photo and personal information is, and one page for your latest entry stamp

Best to lay low and remain with your friends.  No need to go through the crap of registration.  Enjoy your time without  the burecracy

Hulk:

Downvote. Bad idea.

This gets you on a list, and they put your entire stay under a microscope.

I don't know.  The first two times that I visited china, I stayed with friends. No problems.

But you are supposed to register, and china is a bit more particular about it now than then, I think.

If your friends have a visa and they are already registered at the local police Station, its not a problem. You and your friend need to go to the police station with your passport . You don't need to say anything.. just hand over both passport and they will give you the registration papers.

I went to the local police in Changchun with my GF when I arrived a few months ago.  Just needed my passport.  They were not used to it and found it amusing to have contact with a foreigner.  The policeman doing the registration was friendly and even offered to extend my visa if I required it.  I had a double entry visa and he told my GF that I do not need to register again when I return on my second visit, just give him a call.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
