Q: Renouncing Chinese citizenship
Last August, my son was born in China. His mother is Chinese and father British. I have already applied for and been given my sons British passport as we want him to be British and not Chinese.
At the moment he is still recognized in China as being Chinese and not British. I want to renounce his Chinese citizenship and let them know that he is a British citizen.
Has anyone been through this experience in China and could give me some advice of the process you had to go through as well as what needs to be done and when with the PSB. They like nothing more than to fine people for missing the opening windows for updating them so I want to be prepared.

You have to first go to the head PSB office, than to another office to register your application that states you wish to renounce his Chinese citizenship, the PSB will give you the address of where to go, but there will be a lot of waiting and paper, my first son took me 5 months to finish the whole deal. But what ever you do DON'T tell them you already got a British passport.
British are not 'citizens', but 'subjects'. Mind your manners Mr. Morrison.

You're actually better off keeping the baby's Chinese citizenship. It's easier to get whatever paperwork for the baby that you need for the uk while the baby is a Chinese citizen and you are his UK father. That is if you plan on staying in China in the future for a long period of time. It's just easier.
I was say, keep his citizenship Chinese until you are close to move out. Like Biggj says, it will be an amazing hassle to get any small thing done due the paperwork and running into incompetent workers... one after the other.
When or if you are ready to move to the UK, then get the papers going.
