Okay so I go to the grocery store and this rmb I had was a little ripped. The lady said she couldnt' take it. However, I go to some other place and they take it. Although, I'm not exactly sure if the lady at the cash register saw that it was slightly ripped. So can you use a slightly ripped rmb or will the stores never except it if they see it that way>

The real answer is no. If someone does take it it's most likely because they didn't notice.
You can take it to any bank though and they will exchange it for a new note. Most banks you don't need to grab a number and wait in line to do this, they will do it right away for you. It's never taken me longer than 2 minutes to exchange some damaged notes for new ones at a bank in China.
Yesterday I wanted to buy a drink at a vending machine at the subway station. I did not have coins, but two 5 Yuan bills. one was very new, one was old, soft and a bit broken. I tried 5 times to use the new bill without any luck, the machine didnt accept it. The first try with the old and shitty bill was successful and I got my drink... wtf...
I've never had any problems paying with bills that have a slight rip. If they don't want to except it, there's another store that will.
I recently got a bank note where someone had drawn a pair of cartoon glasses and a cigarette over you-know-who. Thought it was quite comical though I was lucky that someone actually accepted it when I used it.
