I thought I would help out any people who haven't been to China but are thinking about coming, the following are the 'real' Chinese rules for driving.
Those people who are already in China, please feel free to add any rules of your own you are aware of.
1. You must give way to anyone you look at, even if you are doing 120kph down an expressway, if you look at another driver you must allow that driver in front of you.
2. When joining another road you must not turn your neck and you must pull out straight away.
3. Red lights are there because red is a lucky colour, feel free to ignore any lights of that colour.
4. The only part of your vehicle that counts is the front wheels, once they are parked or past an obstruction, the rest doesn't matter.
5. If you cannot see where you are going drive faster to get to somewhere where you can see.
6. The inside lane is for parking, the central lane can also be used for parking and if your are picking up or dropping off at a kindergarten so is the outside lane in a three lane road.
7. When the road ahead is obstructed use the bike lane and honk your horn for the bikes to get out of the way. When the bike lane is obstructed or just too slow use the pavement, honk your horn for the pedestrians to get out of the way.
8. You MUST get there first!.
9. Drive on the same side of the road that your destination is on.
10. At junctions with three lanes in each direction traffic must form at least 7 lines of traffic and race for the other side!
11. If you have an 'O' plate or military plate, obviously none of these rules apply............sir!

Well I am shocked that you should say such outrageous things. They are all completely true. And I am shocked.
2 & 9 are spot on.
If you doubt #2 you have not been in China long, or you are less than observant.
I live near a 'real' part of China, factory land, I stand at an intersection and watch the traffic. it is waaaaay amazing. the side traffic just pulls out, never slows, never yields, never looks...
the best I can figure is they assume (if they think at all, which honestly I do not think they do) the oncoming vehicles will pull left and avoid them. Seems fine usually, but what a cavalier approach to Life & Death, not for themselves, but the children in the automobile/trike/moped.
well, somebody told me that they think whatever will happen, will happen. I think that equates to do whatever, don't consider. Perhaps that explains the overloaded school busses careening down mountain-sides in the rain. Too bad scores of school-children die violent deaths from this mentality.

Somebody told you the Chinese think 'whatever will happen, will happen'? Was it a Chinese person? 'Cause i've honestly wondered about this; whether or not it's just some philosophical approach to life that allows people to treat their own mortality in such a haphazard manner as so many people seem to do on the roads. Certainly is a puzzler.
ive had a few situations where the driver of a car or motorcycle takes a long look at me( black person) since im sure most people in the country havent seen a black person before, and they forget to look where they are going and almost getting into an accident but im yet to se an accident lol not that i wish that on any1 but if it happened they only have themselves to blame
I'm pretty sure at Chinese driving schools they only teach how to use the horn, and flash the high beams.
stan118:
you mean flash or have it on all the time including during the day lol
you must use the horn every 5 seconds no matter what no traffic or traffic this is a must
mArtiAn:
I agree entirely, I use mine more often than that even. Most of the time when i'm not even driving! Almost worn the blessed thing out.
Indicators are optional and feel free to use the wrong one just before turning
Two objects can occupies the same space and time
if I do a u turn and I don't see you You cant hit me
If you do a U turn and I don't see you then I will not hit you
if you run over a foreigner you can claim compensation for the damage to your car
a pedestrian crossing is a target rich environment
and the list goes' on
