Does anyone have any experience with the S1 visa process? Can it be taken care of in HK or is it a 'only in home country' type of thing?
8 years 2 weeks ago in Visa & Legalities - China
I only know of one S visa instance. A European guy, had pushed his luck with tourist and business visas, was eventually given his 2 week " collect your stuff and go" tourist visa when he applied for a year business visa in HK. His passport was full.
He eventually took the advice of me and my mate, went back to Europe, new passport, invite letter from his Chinese GF, and came back with an S2. They got married, and then got a Q visa in China.
The invite letter is a personal letter, not Government issued. So it can't stipulate collection in HK.
I fear it is a go home to apply for visa. I stand to be corrected tho. This was a few years ago.
Good luck spider

Just to add. I know the S is supposed to be for family of foreigners here on a work or student visas, but it's also supposed to cover special circumstances. Seems that visiting your Chinese partner is included in that.
Spiderboenz:
Why would he get an S2 visa if she is a Chinese national? S visas are for non-Chinese nationals.

I think the S is a sort of "catch all that we missed" visa. I think it covers Chinese who have changed their nationality for example.
ScotsAlan:
But honestly, a visit to the PSB might be your best bet. It's easy to change any visa to a Q inside China. The same might apply to S.
The example I gave of an S is the only one I know. And that was pretty specific as he had been told he would not be given any more tourist or business visas in HK. But he did get an S in Europe, on a new passport. He got married on his S, and now lives here on a Q. He does not work of course

This sucks to hear. She can't go back to her home country for this; warfare.
I got 30-days S2 visa in Fujian, after I received dismissal notice from the School in 2014. Our Contract stipulated that either party can terminate contract for no cause/reason given with 30-days notice.
School demanded, we visit PSB and cancel RP with 7-days exit China term, what is rule at gross Contract violations.
After I dialed Fujian SAFEA, I was permited to stay 30-days on the School's premisses (apartment), and before expiration of 30-days dismissal notice, PSB gave me 30-days S2 visa.
In my understanding, S2 visa was the same as 30-days mandatory visa (either L or 30-days RP extension) at the completition of the Contract. SAFEA monitored whole process and agent told me: 'That's how things are done in Fujian.'
I departed Fujian for Henan, where I signed new Contract. However, after my arrival to Henan, rep told me, School's 'laowai hire authorisation' is still in progress, and School can't extend my valid RP (S2), and I had to exit China, and apply for new Z in my home country.
School paid for exit & return trip, and lost salaries for the time (3m) I was able to return to China.
You can expect some fuk-up will always occur in China, so when you're looking for the new position, always talk to the seven schools in the same time. Never only with one, like we do in West.
'Ave Maria' in my tunes. Again!

... This has nothing to do with a new position. This has to do with making sure that my wife can stay in China with me.
I can't comment because...snails.
I wasn't sure, what do you want to know, so I wrote what I know about S2. It was new to me too, and I didn't get much about it from Gov, just that's proper procedure/visa in Fujian.
I got S2 in China, so I guess some conversion/extension is possible in China.
I would ask about it at FEB or PSB, or send an email to ForeverBright in HK.
It can be done in HK.
SpongeBob:
Q1 has to be done in the home country. S1 s2 can be done in hk.
