I'm still kinda new here, and torn about buying stuff from dirty-handed street vendors...especially the meat brochettes you can find anywhere...
Is it generally alright, or a thousand times dirtier than in a restaurant?
I've never gotten sick from street food in China but I do think you have to be careful who you buy from. You should look out for things like whether many locals buy food there (if so, it can't be too bad), if the oil looks clean and relatively fresh etc. I think most bread type snacks are pretty safe because they're deep fried or cooked at high temperatures, but I'd be more wary about snacks with meat as A) you don't know what meat it is, and B) it might not be fresh.
BTW, restaurants can be notoriously dirty too!
You get sick once, then you're good to go for life. It's like those initiations rituals. go for it. But if you're overweight, find whatever excuse you can imagine to avoid them. You can't judge a book by its cover, but by looking at your profile picture, you might wanna start and brainstorming...
