Q: Safe to get a tooth implant in China?

So I was in a biking accident over the weekend. Long story short, I crashed into a moped, flipped over it and face planted into the ground, breaking my front tooth in half in the process. I had the rest of the tooth pulled the next day (it was shattered), and am now trying to figure out whether or not to get an implant done in Beijing.

Suffice it to say, I really don't trust much of anything in China these days, particularly a piece of metal being attached to my jawbone for the rest of my life in a Chinese dental hospital. I know that it would likely be a lot cheaper here than in the states, but I worry about all of the things that could go wrong. The tooth extraction itself was disturbing enough to keep me away.

Are my fears ungrounded or do you think I'm making the right decision to have the operation done back home for a lot more money?

Have you tried the SOS clinics in Beijing?

:

I looked over the SOS website after it first happened. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of information on the site about what they can/can't do and how much it costs.

I initially went to the China-Japan friendship hospital here, and they turned me away and told me to go to the Beida Kouqiang Yiyuan over in Haidian district. This led me to believe that tooth extraction/implants are kind of a specialized thing here.

I've also heard that the international hospitals are really really expensive here, and since I'm going home this summer anyway, that would be the most cost effective/safe option.

Anyone else use SOS before?

GuilinRaf:

Yes they are not cheap.

Did you try calling them? maybe by phone they can give you a price quote.

As an alternative, would it be worth your while to make a Hong Kong run?

Hope that you can get it solved quickly!

:

Yeah I should just call them. Now that I'm not feeling as shitty, it's time to fix this thing.

I hadn't thought of Hong Kong...that could hold potential.

Also, your pun is appreciated ("mouth problems suck")

I was a bit reluctant to include it, but decided what the hey. Sometimes a chuckle at a very bad pun can lighten things up a bit...

Good luck!

I've read a few responses to Chinese dentistry on this site and almost all of them have been complimentary on both quality and price.

Try digging through some old threads on search, you could save yourself a fortune.

Obviously I have no first hand experiences to give you, but I was told if you don't ask for anaesthetic you won't automatically be given any. So, ..............ASK!
