Q: Secrets to finding "authentic" gifts/souvenirs in China?

I am starting to think about what to buy friends and family back home for the holiday season... the problem being, most everything I see these days on "ancient culture street"-type areas is completely fake or terrible quality.

Does anyone have any secrets on how/where to find "authentic" gifts to give to people?

I would love to know how to find artisans who make their own paintings/scrolls/pottery/etc., instead of paying for fakes that are mass produced in factories.

Try art galleries/antique shops for the high quality stuff.  Otherwise, it depends on where you live.  For example, here in Guangzhou, there is a street lined with shops where you can buy hand painted stuff.  They will even have their artists make paintings for you if you provide them with an example.

They also do other traditional things such as wood carvings, silk paintings, lettered scrolls, furniture, etc...
