Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: should the aussie govt halt exports from china until Mather is released?
i didn't realize that there was no complaining witness. i thought they simply didn't charge the intruders.
so exactly what law did he break?
when chinese people go to aus or us they deserved to be treated fairly just the same as anyone else.
but in this case what you have is a man simply being locked up because ....
the aussie govt should show some balls and demand his release or put a freeze on visas from china or start kicking out the kids of govt officials who are going to school in aus
Their people should be outside the Chinese embassy throwing rocks at it.

You're thinking of Chinese people in China, particularly outside the Japanese embassy.
We are more civilised in Australia. We drink ourselves to death in protest.
This story has not even made the media here
The Red headed Freak is in China right now with the foreign minister
however this will not make the headlines until they are out of there if at all
Traveler:
Neither of them know how to deal with China, nor do they understand the risks that China poses to Australia.
Gillard had nobody in the government to replace Kevin Rudd as Foreign Minister, when she foolishly sacked him, and had to bring in Bob Carr as an unelected outsider so we would have a Foreign Minister.
Then Carr started to push for Rudd to be returned as Prime Minister, because he knows that neither he nor Gillard can deal with China. Only Rudd can.
Of course, I might be biased...
There are actually four Australians in jail because of business deals. It's on the agenda for the next party meeting (I belong to the local branch of the ruling Labor Party).
The Prime Minister's idea is to blame Australians for not understanding the "risks" involved in doing business with China. She brushes it off with "Australians need to learn China's rules."

GuilinRaf:
It is a catch 22. Since "hongbaos" are part of business culture here, if the foreign business person does not give the hongbao, at best, he wont get the business. At worst, he will face trumped up criminal charges.
On the other hand, if he DOES give a hongbao and is caught, then the foreign government will chastise him for his "dishonest business practices.
Either way, the foreigner looses.
Oddly, there is no way around this. Since he was convicted in a court, and being deported, in is not a case of a human rights violation but rather an example of Chinese 'Justice'
-There aren't really grounds to raise a formal diplomatic protest. On the other hand, private investors should be TERRIFIED by cases like this.

Absolutely spot on. Investors should hear about Mather and others before losing a dime. Anyone who thinks they play fair here is in for a rude awakening.
Ms. Gillard seems blissfully ignorant. The Australian government seems complicit in China's gangster tactics. Just my opinion.
Mather has now left prison, and decided to also leave Australia for New Zealand, rightfully disillusioned at Australia's poor response.
It also appears that there are 35 Australians in jail in China, almost half the entire number of Australians in jail worldwide.

Half the Australians in jail in China are for business deals gone wrong.
