Q: should Ecc post its rules to avoid any further confusion?

So as we all know there has been some discrepancy with rules and mods interpretation of the fore mentioned .
So why not put it out there for all of us to see .
whether it eases hostile tention will remain to be seen

I think the regular users should stop baiting each other.

ScotsAlan is an excellent choice for moderator. Some people are provoking him because he's a mod. Grow up, people.

philbravery:

actually im baiting him because apart from clean up work he decides what rules to impose at whimsy so lets have some clarity and consistentcy so we can move forward also i let him off the hook today out of charity .and it was just too easy

Thanks Samsara .

When people put complaints up on a thread, I have often sent a PM to explain the decision making process. I am not making any rules up, just following the number one rule direct from Grumpy cat, you need a good reason to remove anything.

On most days I check the board every hour or so on my phone. But my paying job makes too many demands on me some days, so things might be up for longer than some people like. Not much can be done about that.

There is a fair amount of spam that is removed. A lot more than I expected. But spam can be difficult at times. A spam bait can't go until it has been spammed. Because what if it is a genuine question, but maybe not worded right. Grumpy Cat does not allow me to follow "a gut feeling". I need to be able to justify everything I remove.

And yes, sometimes I rise to the bait, but when Grumpy asked me to do this job, I told him I am a poster first and will be a mod second.  That is certainly the case.

@ Phil. Mod baiting?  So you deliberately post stuff that you want to be removed. Then complain about being harmonized when it is?  And if it's not removed you complain about that.

I just do general housekeeping, clean double posts etc ( Can't seem to get rid of those answered questions on the "need answers"  page though).  If somebody posts something other people don't like, it's not my fault. It's the fault of the poster. It can only be removed if conditions are met.

I have read the terms and conditions. They appear very subjective and are basically worded to allow Admin and mods to do as they please.

No definitions of specific words are provided.

What does profanity mean? The entire concept is subjective. One man's meat is another man's butt-hurt. Obscenity vs. Profanity vs. Vulgarity. Today, profanity is an expression that is specifically offensive to members of a religious group. The definition also extends to expressions that are scatological, derogatory, racist, sexist, or sexual. What is and isn't profane largely depends on the context and the company you keep.

Hotwater:

It's tempting to list what terms might be defined as profanities but then it's only get harmonised!

"The entire concept is subjective."

Doesn't this say it all? Option 1 - allow the mods to make decisions. Option 2 - allow everything.

I don't want to see ECC become another GlobalTimes comment section.

"And just who, precisely, has been involved in this '"hostile tention" (sic)??"

One - and only one - user on this forum at this time is have a winge, and being hostile, towards the mods, and - as he's admitted, is 'baiting' them.

Shining_brow:

Once again - who, precisely (but this time, other than YOU) are there "tentions" that need to be eased?

You've admitted to baiting the mods (Scots & Grumpy) - that is a form of harassment (not too different to spam...!) That alone should get you a ban!

YOU are NOT the mod-police! If you don't like the level of moderation on this forum, then sod off! It's that simple! Go to some other forum and demand that your opinion should be taken as the most important!

And, FTR - no, I didn't request that your posts be deleted. This might shock you, but perhaps it's just possible that your rude and abusive emails were considered worthy of deleting by Grumpy him/herself! I've noticed on here a few posts that have been 'harmonised' (including my own in the past),a nd the poster has re-posted without the offending language...and lo and behold, the post stays! Simple answer - abusive posts (especially targeting another user) will be deleted! OMG - are you really that surprised???

There has also been some leniency - I can get away with calling someone a wanker or a tosser - as to most people, it's not considered bad enough. 'Fuckwit' is obviously deemed too strong. DEAL with it! Remember - the board isn't just visited by people like yourself (thank fk)

Your attitude towards education, and people wanting to better themselves, really sucks!

Yah, my shit stinks. But... I can apologise for it when it offends people. I see that you can't!

Not that I need to, but... my parents paid off their very average house in very average suburbia in 30 years. My father didn't even own his own car until he was retired (which he bought with a small amount of pension money). My mother NEVER went overseas in her entire life, and even going to Sydney (where they grew up) was something very rare (like, 5+ years apart). I'm the ONLY person in my family who went to university. And I paid for my education, by saving, working and then paying off the debts!

So, you can go and pull that plastic spoon out of your arse, and try to dig away at that chip on your shoulder!

I don't think there is a need to post the T&Cs.

As Grumpy cat said at first. This is an experiment. No doubt he will meet up with his boss at some point and discuss if it should be continued or not.

When that time comes, maybe he will post a question asking for feedback from everyone.  Maybe that would be the best time for you to have your say rather than spend your time "mod-baiting". ( your words, quote from above:"actually im baiting him..")

And if Grumpy Cat decides to not continue with the experiment, I will just keep posting away as normal. I will probably post less of course, because I will not have to be running up my phone bill by having to check ECC several times a day.

I saw this question this morning, and I do have an option in my "list of reasons" to remove this thread. And it's not the "not China Specific" option. But hey, what people post is up to them.

Everyone on here knows what they can and cant post. I know because I have had a fair few deleted wink.

If you see a post you don't like, use your down vote button. If it's a post that firmly crosses a line, it will be removed. If it is on the edge, it will stay up so everyone can have their say.

It's not up to me to decide what people can see. That would be censorship. I don't want to see that on here. And I would refuse to do it.

And yup, we live in China, so there are a few rules that don't apply in the West. Some posts on " sensitive subjects"  might have to be removed. We all know that. It has to be done sometimes to avoid ECC going on the blocked list.

But, Grumpy Cat is actually quite a brave cat. There is lots of stuff on here that could be removed as sensitive, but Grumpy has guts, so it stays. I reckon he should be thanked for that. It's him in the firing line if a clampdown happens.

So, I think we should celebrate our little corner of freedom (relatively) that we have in China. Researchers are free to ask questions. Spam will be removed ( but some might be missed), the occasional poster will come along trying to get under our thick skin, and often we will see answers that we don't think are quite right.

In the end, we are all adults on here. We all know what we can and cant post. I did not agree to do this moderating expecting to have people demand a firmer hand. I am not a headmaster in a school telling off kids for being naughty.

Right, I'm off to hunt spam. I have been busy at work today so I hate to think what is awaiting on the "need answers" wink

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
