Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: Should I leave mainland China in order to set up a VPN?
I bought a new MacBook while vacationing in the Philippines and got back to China yesterday. I went online with the intent of downloading my VPN and then I remembered something - I am in China now. Sure enough, my VPN website was blocked along with several others I tried. I immediately kicked myself in the head for not downloading it in the Philippines (but then again, I was busy drinking). What are my options now? I need a VPN for work and to access Gmail. Should I go to HK to set it up? Are there any VPN's (good ones) that aren't blocked? I'm open to any suggestions.

You can install it here,no need to go H.K

The point I'm trying to make is that I can't install it here because the website to do so is completely blocked. I simply can't access it or any other VPN website for that matter. If you know a VPN site that I can access to install, please let me know.
You can install it anywhere. It sounds to me like you are blocked from downloading a free VPN. If that is true PM me and I will help you.

There is no such a thing as "downloading a VPN". A VPN is a connection to a remote computer. The idea is that the remote computer is itself connected to the regular uncensored Internet you can enjoy elsewhere. You tunnel all your traffic to that the remote computer, no Great Firewall in between.
To get a VPN (ie. a connection to a remote computer):
* You setup a computer for that purpose back home, it's always on, and you connect to it. Ideally, with an encrypted connection like SSH.
* You pay someone who have done that and sell such a connection. It's what the myriad of VPN services offer.

Though often you do download appropriate software that automates the process of getting the right addresses etc.
You don't install a VPN, it makes as much sense as saying "I download a phone line". A VPN is a connection to a remote computer, itself connected to uncensored Internet. You either setup a computer out of China and connect to it (a relative, a friend, etc), or you buy such a connection ie. VPN services...

Yeah, I meant to say I need to download my VPN application to my new computer (I've been using Astrill) and then purchase a set number of months to use it (I usually get a year at a time).

The VPN service I use does not require anything to download/install, and it's not the only one. I find this *extremely* convenient :)
I agree, VPNS have been under attack anyways. Best wait and see a little while
Maybe you need a new VPN. I had to switch VPNs several times before finding one that's (relatively) reliable.
Ask a friend who already has a vpn to download it. Then simply transfer the setup file to your computer on a USB stick. Worked for me
do you have an email for the service?
Shoot them an email and they can probably email you the app or at least instructions on how to set it up
I can email you the latest version of Astrill or Goagent if you want.

Thanks for the offer; another teacher in my program did just that (through Mail126, since Gmail was not an option) and I was able to install the application without any issues. Thanks to all for advice, suggestions and help:)
