Q: Should I stay in China?
I am thinking of staying in China or moving to Europe. After being more than 8 years in China I am starting to hate it, people lack of values,no ethic, very shelfish. What are the positive points of this country?, Chinese girls?, develop country more chances to find a good job or set up your own business?. In any case, every week I get angry more than three or four times. Sometimes I really can,t put up with chinese men.At least I have some foreigners friends I can get some beers and relax.
i totally understand you. especially lately, the selfishness and rudeness of Chinese people have been really getting to me. i don't know what to do to calm down. 5000 years of history and they haven't figured out how to be polite. but, you take the good with the bad. the bad, being the lack of values, ethics, rudeness, selfishness, and etc. the good, for me at least, easy working schedule, enough to live very comfortably and save quite a bit, experience different aspects of life you would never have known about back home, yadadada. if the good outweighs the bad, stay. if not, book it. as for an update on my rude d!ck of a neighbor, I've decided to push him down the stairs next time i see him... maybe even spit on him and claim i was just clearing my throat... when in Rome.. push, shove, and spit... the result, a neighbor who falls down the stairs and gets spit on...
You know, Chinese girls are a major plus for China, but European girls are an equally major plus for Europe.

Are Chinese girls a plus for Europe? Or Indian girls? Caribbean girls? They and their men are all there and that's what I love. China is so 100% Chinese. I just read that foreigners aren't rare anymore here in China. Well I think I haven't seen a foreign bus driver yet, or a foreign postman. Or a foreign policeman, that would be something. That would be the end of the world. For a foreign book store I have to go to Beijing. The yearly International Beer Festival in Dalian features lots of international beers, but the foreigners can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Every village in Europe has a Chinese restaurant so if that's what's keeping you here... go home and get some take-away.
I haven't hit that limit of stress yet in China. Maybe because HK is next to us.

I'd love to leave here, but I don't have the economic independence I need to do that.
Anyway I am looking for a job in Europe, also in order to be closer to my family.
I get angry very often here, daily I must say.
This is not good for health and seems that the only way to solve the problem is to leave this place.
Chinese people are just MONEY LOVERS. They ask you how much is your income before asking you what your name is... They prefer to leave their new born kids to the parents in order to go to work just for money (even if they're already rich)..
Not to mention their manners and impoliteness.
The problem is also that you cannot change them...you never will.. and it will not get any better.

even for non-chinese company.
looking for job in Czech and around Europe now too. I have got more reply's from them than in here, in shanghai. and shanghai have just double the population than my whole loved home country :) Just the problem is money too, not too much and even delayed salaries, not willing to pay us the compensation and you can not do nothing :( just wait. Once I secure it, I will arrange the fly for us. or, fly first and than go to first warehouse working i will find on the way from airport.

As a chinese,i have to say that it hurts and depressing to hear so many posters above (especially foreign friends) saying bad things about my country,still remember a friend told me how some chinese badly damage enviroment,throwing rubish everywhere,.. and i really sympathize with your bitter painful experience here even though i could never understand since i wont have the same experience as outsiders like you guys ...
Better to think of good and interesting things happened to you here may be a good ideato easy your angry.

Hi Sophie, we are not confused and your grammar isn't that bad at all and your words are kind and friendly. I can imagine our negative opinions may hurt the feelings of a Chinese but I also think the people of China need to learn to see themselves as others see them. Urgently. And your advice, to think of pleasant things and ignore the rest, is exactly the problem in China. Don't dream your pretty pink dreams any longer, face the mess and confront your fellow being when he annoys you. ('No smoking means no smoking motherphucker, there's the door and you'd better be on the other side of it'). Chinese people that have been abroad may enlighten you. Talk to them, what do they think is wrong here. It's not only foreigners... it's the ones that have had their eyes opened.

Sophie, I don't think that China is a terrible place. My country isn't perfect. There isn't any perfect country. However, OP is not having a good time in China. After 8 years it's either he moves out ASAP or stays forever. Why should he stay if he doesn't feel at home here? I'm having a good time in China, but I feel like I am a guest here. I don't want to be a part of Chinese society. It's not because I don't like it, but because it's not suitable for me. Why should people complain about China and spread negative energy? If you like it, great. If you don't like it, start working on your plan to move back home.

My dear Sophie, I feel your pain. Sadly Chinese are taught to be ultra sensitive when it comes to anything about their country. That along with the thought behind that quote helps keeps China's problems in place.
If you want to fix problems, you must look at the problem, acknowledge the problem, talk about the problem and then work together to fix the problem. Yesterday, I watched someone get pickpocketed. This is a perfect example of what is wrong in China. The lady was getting onto the bus, she just got off her phone, she puts her phone into her coat pocket (big no no), her friend is standing behind her, but both look down to the ground, for some reason people here put all their effort into not paying attention to what is going on around them, the thief walks up beside her (very close), takes her phone out of her pocket and walks away. How on Earth could she or her friend not notice?!?!?! I ran towards them but they with their heads down had already boarded the bus. A fully grown man was standing there, saw the whole thing and was staring at me with that god awful stupid smile on his face. Don't do anything, accept the fate, think of something positive.
You want proof that you have power to fix this country, look at the story about the corrupt Renmin University recruiter. He was exposed by people talking about it online.

Sophie, you sound like one of the good ones. If more Chinese were like you, then China would have a very different face painted on it. I have been in China for seven years and I can speak Mandarin decently well. I had a two-hour conversation with my wife's cousin on a ride from her village to the city where we live. If I couldn't speak Mandarin, I would have never figured that we had so much in common and that he was actually a very polite and open guy. Most foreigners do not speak Mandarin and I am sure many good Chinese can't speak English.
So it is hard for each side to understand each other and quite frankly, many Chinese have very poor manners and are very badly educated. I am hoping that the next generation of Chinese will drastically change China and I have seen some change, perhaps it will be enough. I do love China but Chinese people do need to change in order to get along with the rest of the world.

Perhaps you are used to a very convoluted approach to criticism. Some of us are from places where things are said with no sugar-coating what-so-ever.
You have to look at how many of your Chinese sisters desperately are looking for a foreigner.
Critique is not (always) meant to be evil. If I see something that I think is wrong, and I walk past it without saying anything, it means I don't care. If I comment/criticize it it means I either care or find it so despicable that it should never happen.

I don't think you should stay in China. You know that yourself. You should try to look for a job in Europe. Where are you originally from? Don't leave China before finding a job in Europe or at least having a potential job in mind, though.
You said the only thing you like about China is the girls here. Then you said that you cannot get on with Chinese men that well. Imagine you stay in China and settle down. You might father a Chinese man. He will be born and raised in China, might look Chinese.
Take a step back and think clearly.
What are you going back for, where will you stay, how will you survive. There are a lot of bad things in Europe as well and a lot of nasty people.Their is a lot of nice genuine people here.
Unfortunately there are also a lot of nobheads, but where are there not nobheads?
As a European, you can teach anywhere in Europe with next to no limits and restrictions. You will not be far from home, and you will not have all the internet restrictions meaning you can contact people back home freely.
I have just left China after having my visa declined. You can read my story on my thread.
I may come back fo love, but, the £2000 a month I could earn there when i return, as well as owning another training centre as I did before is not enough to come back.
Other then the fact I lost someone who really loved me, and who i really loved, I can rest in the knowledge that I am free from that place now.

European TEFL market is much more demanding, and less paying than Chinese. Slim chances for Non-Native English speaker to land long term teaching job in EU with similar pay (and free accommodation) as in China.

I Said European, not Native.
I am British. Europeans have freedom of movement. I don't need a visa to work in some places, and in those where I do need a work permit, I am almost guaranteed to get it, even without a degree.
On the other hand, most Non-Europeans have it far harder.

I am not a Native German speaker, or a Native Chinese Speaker. If you are one of these, there are jobs out there. You win some and lose some.
Back to original point,
I can teach anywhere in Europe except Germany.

Icnif, it is very difficult for non-Europeans to score teaching jobs in the EU. As there are so many British and Irish people they can hire visa-less, and plenty of fluent non-natives, most schools will dismiss anyone else out of hand.

I am what they call a real English Teacher.
Everyday it seems this country gets closer and closer to North Korea status. That whole fly zone thing is a big example. The explosion in Qingdao happened as workers were already on the scene.I am willing to bet that it was worker negligence or someone deciding the rule of no smoking does not apply to him.
Everyday I have to fight my students to get them out of their lazy habits. Trying to get them to understand the principles behind a functioning society without breaking the laws (you know what I mean).
I have sharpened my skills as a teacher here. I really feel I can help students develop into successful people. But the schools are my number adversary in China.
If I teach in India, will the schools get angry if I fail students who cheat or do not come to class? Will the schools support me in teaching and encouraging my students to do the actual work in order to sharpen their skills. Will they look at me funny when I yell at them to stop feeding each other answers and looking for someone to feed you the answers. Your brain is a muscle , you must use it often in order to make it strong. You have your own brain why rely on someone else's? WHy am I the bad guy teaching this?
Basically, I feel your pain brother.

Good one brother, fellow frustrated chap. When I'm exasperated enough I just blurt out that cheating is 'Chinese style' and completely unacceptable in any ordered society. I usually only say this on week days.
If you are really miserable everyday, then I say it is time to head home or head somewhere else. Though don't just pack up and go, if I were you I'd start looking for jobs back home, while continuing to live here and then head back when you have a job lined up. Nothing worse then going home and being miserable there too because you have no money and nothing to do all day.
If you are feeling that way then make a plan to get out. It is doubtful you could land a job back home while you are here but take some time while you presumably have a job here to get back in touch with lost friend/relatives/former colleagues who might be able or willing to help you in some manner make the transition (thinking a place to stay for a while, job lead etc.). Hone up a little on some skills you might need to land a job as well and then just buy a ticket back and pray for the best. Life is short. Wish you all the best.

there are so many parts of the world to see. There are beautiful women no matter where you go, except maybe Siberia. People are people and they all have their moments. Personally I haven't been here long. I like parts of it and can't stand others. Crowded and cramped trains, pushy people (male and female) and the gawkers. It the same at home though. I walk through the streets of my Silesian hometown and old people, young people all sit intheir windows and stare, it part of our culture.
If you have to question whether to stay or go, you already know in your heart that you should move on. I recommend trying to teach in Poland. Its a nice place and the women there are beautiful. We have more than women though. Good beer, fine food and some beautiful countryside. Its not too far from Czech Republic and Slovakia. Also wonderful places. We don't have too many Chinese girls. We're not big fans of outsiders, but we like Americans for some strange reason. Women are everywhere. Chinese ladies are wonderful, but if that's all that keeps you here, then move on. They are everywhere.
In 8 years did you visit any other countries? I really like being in China and can't always explain it. Despite having BCD I usually feel happy and completely at home. I was just in Philippines and while I didn't see much in a week, I thought it was a shit hole, but I had the best time. I think I'll write the script for ''Hangover IV'' now.
I have been in China 6 years. I hear what you are saying. I go to Canada every year. Each year I return only to find something got worse. I enjoy the entertainment and feel a bit sad for the Chinese youth whom I teach. They will inherit a China that is void of self respect and heavy on saving face. We may all be forced to leave China considering the new air space that the CCP is claiming. But I believe this country has lots of potential. The pollution is the thing that bothers me most. The retards I can handle.
I also feel the same...P-ssy is the only thing I find good about this country......Mainland Chinese men suck...people are so rude and shameless...Im trying to set up leaving now....I find myself angry all the time....I should of went to Japan sometimes I think.
