Q: Should i use a recruiter or should I simply send my resume directly to the school?

So far I have used recruiters and the jobs have been nightmares. Recruiters pressure me to sign contracts and when I actually get to the school they either change the contract terms when i get there or they violate the contract in some other way. I am curious if it would be better if i simply choose a Chinese city such as Urumqi, Hotan, Hohhot ot Kashgar and send resumes to any school that peaks my interest. I figure if they are able to hire me through a recruiter they could hire me directly.

You have to remember that the school needs permission to hire foreign workers .
China is a mine field of traps and frustration.
Maybe write a article about your experiences on the front page of this site as the audience is larger.
Good luck to you

There are no laowai-English-teaching job openings in Xinjiang since ... 2014 or so.

Currently, there is an Uyghur-Reeducation-program going on in Xinjiang, and I'd say, foreigners can't witness that.

However, Xinjiang was very nice province ... for few lucky foregners, he he

I have found my last three jobs going directly to schools (one university, two high schools) -- though the high school school I most wanted to work at (because of its proximity to my house) would only hire through a recruiter.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
