Q: Should US focus on containing China now?

Obama administration is pulling troops out of Iraq and Afhanistan and claiming US is "returning" to Asia, many Chinese believe the US return to Asia is to contain China.  One Chinese general predicts this policy change is a mistake of US government and may eventually lead to another major terror attack on US by its real enemy.  Do you agree with this viewpoint?

Contain them in what way?  Militarily?  How would they even do that in a way that wouldn't provoke a war?

No. Even the US isn't that stupid.  They might use the US military to help some of the more volitile Asian countries find some stability, thereby generatin much needed brownie points in the pacific rim area.  But that is all that I can think they would use the military for in Asia.

yes US should contain china now simply by adopting fair trade agreements with china. if china charges 22% tariffs on US goods  adopt a 22% tariff on goods made in china (including goods made by american corps in china) if china adds any additional markup to american products, respond in kind to chinese made products. if china wants to penalize companies for hiring foreigners with some ridiculous tax then respond in kind. if china mandates that foreigners must have a local partner and that partner can screw a foreigner over at anytime, respond in kind.
fair practices is kryptonite to china

I don't think he ever said he was a native English speaker. As far as being a local, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I suspect that the US will increase it's presence in the Pacific, given some of China's posturing recently - Vietnam, Thailand, Philipinnes... perhaps even Taiwan. The US will want to send a message to China to back off.

Hopefully, this will extend to the US pressing for China to adopt greater changes with the political system (being more transparent) as well as clean up its Human Rights... as well as increasing trade. Carrots and sticks!!!

The US is pulling soldiers out of Okinawa because the local people don't want the base there and it's within range of Chinese missiles. The new base in Australia is out of China's range and gives the US the ability to blockade China's oil shipments coming from the Middle East. China has been checkmated. If it wants the oil that's fueling it's economy then it has to be a good boy.

China is being contained, and at the behest of the smaller countries in Asia that have been under China's thumb throughout history like Vietnam, South Korea, Myanmar, and India, the US is taking a more forceful approach. This is good because it makes China consider it's actions very carefully.
