Q: Should you wear new clothes for CNY with a Chinese family?
My Chinese friends have been on somewhat of a shopping craze lately, not only buying gifts for their families, but new outfits for themselves as well. One friend told me that it is a custom to wear brand new clothes on Chinese New Year. I guess that's not too different to Christmas in the West then. But is it rude if one shows up in non-new clothes when invited to a Chinese family's CNY dinner?
With the all together lunch and dinner with the family I just wear a suit which I is around 2 years old. Dont really care if I wear "old" clothes so long as I am not dressing like a hobo.
Haven't heard of that at all. Actually my Chinese family haven't heard of it either.
I am required to wear NEW RED UNDERWEAR, by my wife, for the New Year,,,,,, not sure if I get to wear them for all 3 days.
And she went to Hong Kong to work, to make a few bucks before the New Year, and came home with zero, because she spent everything she made on clothes for ME, because I told her she isn't to be buying new clothes for herself with her new found wealth.
My fault, instructions were not clear enough!!!!
Yes ,its a custom to wear new clothes on Chinese new year for Chinese families especially for traditional families.we say it"辞旧迎新“ in Chinese means bid farewell to the old and usher in the new,a new year,a new start ,a new clothes........Hope all the new things will bring us some luck in the new year.Is it rude if one shows up in non-new clothes when invited to a Chinese family's CNY dinner? NO,it's fine as long as your clothes smell clean and They will appreciate your coming. Enjoy it.

.."as long as your clothes smell clean" ? Who is checking the aroma of one's clothing? C'mon guys! We are in a country of people who don't even shower daily and eat full cloves of garlic like they are M &M's.
will "something bad happen" if you do not wear new clothes ?
