Q: Signed a contract before the virus. School gone quiet

I signed a contract and got most of the extra paperwork done before the virus started. I'm supposed to start in the beginning of September. But for the last few months the school has gone quiet and they aint replying to emails or anything. Do I wait for them to answer as there's a few more months to go. Or do I cut my losses and look for a new job?

A number of factors could be part of the silence. If the school is not opened yet, like primary, kindergarten, and training schools, you are propbaly the last thing on their minds. Is the school ot program still in operation, or did they go bankrupt?

Without knowing more about your situation, it is difficult to help. Are you a new teacher coming to China? Are you inside or outside of China? Where were you coming from? Where were you going to work at?

There is no simple answer to help you without more information.

I have been fortunate to be working with a company/school that does not play games. We got paid full salary throughout the quarantine, and we did online lessons. We have been back in the classroom for about a month since we are a high school in a less infected part of China. Contracts have been signed by all of our foreign teachers and we are beginning the processing of paperwork for the start of the 2020-21 school year. We might have to work an extra week or two into the summer, but the school is doing everything to limit the extra time required by the province education system.

Although we have been lucky within our company and schools, I know many have been very unlucky. Without a reliable blacklist available for research, it is sometimes difficult to find reputable educations companies in China. Overall, it is more about being lucky than research and skill to find a great place to work in China. That said, there are some great places to land in China.

Wish you the best of luck.

Either ...

- You shouldn't click 'Enter' several times ...;

- If you are using Pnv, post or comment won't appear right away, after you click 'Enter'. Once, you press 'Enter' again, you'll double or triple your reply/comment, which will be posted several minutes later or at pressing 'Refresh' button;

- Cause for double posts might be also one's weak Internet connection ...

I am talking about observations from my puter. I guess, everyone's device works differently, so it might not work for you.

I've always thought doubles/triples always happened 'cause person is using i-Phone. I mean, it rarely happened at my Mac ...

These days everyone uses smart-phone ... except moi. angel

Cause for double posts might be connected with this website. There is an automatic warning set here, I saw it first time last week ... It goes something like this:

"You posted too many questions today. Give a chance to other posters to ask Qs ..."

I guess, that is set against repeated posts, but it is on.

When I asked Q last week, I was locked out of posting 'cause Q was posted tripled. I had to reset my puter and everything was OK after that ... I also got 15 pints for one Q asked. I strenuously refuse to return extra points ... he he.

Word came today that 'some' primary schools (grade 1 & 2) with return at the end of may. Training centres, extra curricular facilities and the like will open AFTER kindergartens return to normal schedule. There has been no mention of kindergartens in the recent announcements. My wife is following the announcements closely because she is a kindy teacher and does some part time work in a training centre.

As the previous poster says, they may have gone down the gurgler. Many have thrown in the towel recently because they don't have liquid funds to pay 6 months rent, salaries, utilities without income.

Stiggs:

A friend told me his training school has been told they can 'maybe' open in November.

Obviously that should be taken with a grain of salt because I doubt anyone has any idea but if it does go down that way and they haven't figured out how to carry on with online classes a LOT of schools might as well close their doors now and save themselves a lot of debt they can't trade their way out of.

It does make you wonder what the ESL industry in China will look like in 6 months though. Even if schools can stay open recruiting teachers will be a nightmare. I can see online teaching becoming more the norm than physically being in the classroom.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
