Q: Is silk from Suzhou that much better than elsewhere?

I've heard many Chinese rave about the silk in Suzhou and how if I went there I absolutely had to buy some. I'm wondering - is it because that's where it's made or is the quality really superior to what you might find in other cities?

It is because of a combination of things.  Mainly it is the process in which they make the silk.  One of the steps involves laying out long bolts of silk in the open field where it soaks up dew that makes it soft.  There is evidentally something special about the dew in Suzhou that gives the silk a special softness.

Also, their worms have a thousand years of breding to give them the edge in making good silk.

I am not a silk expert, but the silk I have seen from Suzhou has been really nice.

Xpat.John:

I haven't seen the silk from Hangzhou, so unfortunately I don't know how they compare. I do know that when I compared it to silk from Beijing, Hubei and Japan, the Suzhou silk was nicer. However, like everything in China, you need to be careful for the scams. China sells a lot of man-made silk which is really nothing more than thinly spun polyester. (At least that is what I have been told.)
