Q: Smoking and drinking, not a girl's thing?

My roommate told me that her mom gets embarrassed when she smokes because it's not proper for a woman.  As far as I can tell, it doesn't look too hot on a guy either.  Why is it acceptable for guys to drink and smoke, but not girls?

I see girls drinking all the time.  Of course, there are a lot more girls who will refuse to drink than there are guys.

Seeing a girl smoke in public is almost like seeing another laowai in my small town (a rarity).  I think a lot of people associate girls who smoke with those girls that work at KTVs.

it's a stereotype deep rooted in people's mind that gals who smoke and drink are bad...how funny! Shall we assume a virgin is a saint?

In China men are expected to smoke at dinners and possibly other occasions while the ladies look pretty. I think it's cultural.

Girls smoke in private, don't be naive to think otherwise.

Quite a few girls will drink, but it depends on the situation. Usually it is when they are out with friends, or female coworkers or their boss. Some girls just like to drink, and that's fairly acceptable. Smoking is still a "bad girl" thing, and not that many girls do it. If you're a friend they might tell you, but secretly, and you won't see them smoke in public.

From a female expat point of view, this was actually a positive thing.

If I sat at a table with a bunch of Chinese and a couple of male expats (90% + of the time I was the only expat woman) the Chinese would immediately set out to get the boys blind roaring drunk on that hideous crap, baijiou, whether they liked it or not.

"No" was not an acceptable answer for the boys, they would be hounded to drink (admittedly, they usually didn't take all that much pestering), whereas I could just say "I don't want baijiou, and I don't smoke, thank you" and that would be accepted 99% of the time.

On the other hand, on the days where I did want to have a few or more beers, more than any Chinese non-bar-girl could handle, it would be accepted because I was a foreigner and foreigners are strange.
