Q: So how long do you think this site will keep anyone here?

Since this site is created to be a Q and A and not a real forum, how long do you think the regulars will keep answering the same questions over and over again before they get tired of trying to earn the vpn, coat, ect.? There are a limited number of questions that can be asked about China and its culture before we are into topics that get the site closed down forever. So are we excepted to just repeat our conversations to anyone who is too lazy to read old post (simply because we desire more points and have nothing else to discuss on this site)?

I agree, maybe we can share experiences we having here, we can also express how we feel. not always Q and A`s.
I think its a nice place for some of us who don't get to mix with other westerners.

I wondered the same thing. I've seen a few answers that contain certain "sensitive" subjects/buzz words and I ask myself how long people will be able to get away with that. Their deportation orders are prolly being prepared as we type ...

Well prolly not, it's national holiday week, which apparently means another week for people to try to outdo how unproductive they were last week Puzzled

Paranoid ? Yeah that's pretty fair. Conformist ? Me ? HA that's only because I was a political science major so naturally I am extremely careful about what I put in writing (aka paranoid). That being said, catch me face to face I guarantee you your mouth would drop at all of the little things that come out of this seemingly sweet little face :D

Admittedly some of the questions are stupid which takes us back to the question about whether we are getting dumber here!! But I tend to think the site is more of a forum anyway with lots of comments - good and bad. Gee, some are even informative. Tongue
I have found a few snippets of info that I didn't know before so I assume others get the same. But, like Letters to the Editor in your local newspaper it's nice to have a place where you can give something or somebody (in the case of wenna7) a spray, whinge about the people and the culture and mix with other foreigners but without the alcohol and dips and the hangover the next morning!! Cool
When you are at BBQ in your own country what do you talk about with all your friends with a beer in one hand and sausage in the other? Same stuff we are talking about here but applied to your own surroundings, so consider this a HUGE laowai BBQ ok?

Well put!

Agree. I will stay on here until or as long as I am bored and have some spare time. In China I can spend time on here while others are watching TV or talking and if I am in Australia I can catch up on what is going on in China. Hell I even learn a little sometimes. I have tried a few forums and all are pretty much the same, heavily moderated. Cant recall if I have had anything removed on here but I guess I dont push the boundaries much. Posted a few things on China travel forum about the recent train accidents and also a thread about good music that were deleted. I like the interaction between locals and expats but there is a need for more locals who can debate philosophically about a number of issues and as a result we could probably learn a bit more about each others way of life. As all the locals on here prety much have an insular way of looking at things one of two things are going on. 1) If the locals were seen to be agreeing with some of the Westerners pespective of things or questioning some of the doctrine that they are force fed, that it may be erased from the records by the moderators. or 2) The ones who want to learn more and grow in their understanding of the world and learn the truth about many things are not interested in participating.

The site is a good forum to exchange views on China although at times various members can be somewhat abusive but I have noticed that in such cases the Admin generally removes those posts rather quickly.

It is a site with a wide range of interests and it draws people from across the spectrum.

kchur:

You bumped a fifteen-week old thread to passively-agressively make a point that you've made on several other threads, and you call me the abusive one?

I don't believe that your name was even mentioned in my reply. And frankly, I can answer whichever threads I choose to answer, forgive me, but I don't believe that I require your approval nor do I seek it. You should really heed the advice that Traveler has given you. Let's be civil around here, shall we?

@981... Looks like you were right about Admin deleting unwanted abusive posts. The latest lot from a member of the lunatic fringe have already gone. Have you also noticed that these same people are judged by their peers, with many negative comments? Or that they also have the highest number of thumbs down, and their posts are usually collapsed?

Now that it has been 15 weeks since this question has been asked I would have to agree now.
There seems to be alot of repitition, although there are usually interesting questions now and then.
Mr. Cat said we would have a free-for-all forum by this week???
I think a forum combined with the Q & A would keep us more amused.
But I love the BBQ analogy by Daqing...shrimp anyone?

I don't know, I've been here much longer than I thought I would be. I almost have enough points to earn the vpn, but I also want the universal adapter. I don't care about the other prizes. So even if they are the same questions, I'll still be here awhile, probably even after I finish earning what I want. One of the comments here mentioned a sense of community, that's what I like about it. There aren't many expats where I live, so I go online for some sanity.

I find this site to be one of the few actual connections I have with the "outside" world". The fact that I can read that there are others going thru similar experiences as I am is comforting at times. There are times when something happens or I see something and I think to myself, did I just see that? am I the only one who saw that? So I guess my reason for coming here and my reason for continuing to do so is the level of comfort I get from the other posters. At least I know I'm not going crazy from time to time.

I think with China being China, the same questions can have different answers in different cities. So that leaves a lot of scope for participation by many people.

One of the problems I see is that, while most of the old hands are helpful and give sound advice, a distinct few believe this site is their personal domain. They are rude and aggressive to anybody that dares invade their self-perceived private space, or does not agree with their extreme or misguided views.

981977405:

Traveler, again very, very well put. Let's consider the other major boards : Dave's ESL and Mr. Kalgushki the moderator -- well they just don't put up with any kind of incendiary behaviour there at all, the first time, being the last time. ESLTeachersBoard is the same -- direct, frontal personal attacks rarely make it onto the site and they are removed should they appear. Indeed, if the more aggressively rude ones were to get the upper hand around this Board, IMHO it would degenerate very quickly, and I do not believe that QQ International and Tencent, which somehow I believe to be ultimate sponsors of this Board, would really wish that to happen.
