what else will China block?
Uncle Xi has a dream. He wants to guide China and it's culture to it's place at the pinnacle of a new world order. He wants the world to embrace Chinese philosophies and ways of life. But he has a little problem. The world is already intoxicated with Western culture. His answer? Until China can develop it's own culture that is attractive to other nations, he feels he must deny any competition. Does he realize that in doing so, he is weakening his own culture? It's apparent that he doesn't see that. In the meantime, as he tightens his grip, the torrent of creative people are pouring out of China. China is now the number one source of immigrants in the United States and I imagine it is the same in Australia, Canada, UK, etc... The harder you try to limit people, the more ways they will find to escape it.
You should come to Henan. We are 'much more-open-society' than Guangdong's

Problem solving, different approaches

You gotta feel sorry for Xi and his party in a way: His country is at a stage of development where free speech is repressed, while the rest of the world is in the Information Age. Kinda sad, really. It must keep them up at night, worrying about who might have heard what, completely undermining their dictatorial authority all the time.
I would say a mixture of political and commercial.
I really dont understand why it is closing rather than opening.
ScotsAlan:
They are making a massive mistake with this RoyceH.
The greatest depository of human knowledge ever, and the Party are depriving their people.
It's not all youtube and facebook. It's access to international manufacturing standards, patent knowledge, scientific papers on obscure subjects. All these thing would help China. The people who are trying to build China ( through making money), need this information.
This stupid policy of the Party is putting China on the back foot.
And I am amazed by this, because most of the senior Party members are Engineers. But their policy is crippling the Chinese Engineers who are trying to create wealth.
It's an own goal.
So there I am, designing a machine, and I want a bearing. I think an NSK 6002 bearing. 10mm ID.... what is the OD? Easy to find? Not on Chinese internet. All the sites are blocked.
If I Bing " Ball bearing standard dimension table", I just get stupid answers about ball bearing production, how to bear up with being single, railway condemns German Bearings, do you want a Chinese wife? It can take ages to find something that should take seconds.
If I use Google... bang there is my answer.
By blocking the sites that have worked hard to create the algorythms people need, they are just shooting themselves in the foot.
This is a stupid policy. It is a policy that will harm China.
It already is.
And I think the story about the Canadian in Shenzhen was a bit of a dig by the press towards the Government.
This stupidity belongs in the Mao era. Not the 21st Century.
Wow... that rant has been brewing for a while.
Just let us do our jobs FFS. Stop putting barriers in our way. You are quickly turning pro China peole into anti China people with this stupid policy.
DrMonkey:
Yup. How many time I wasted time precisely over things like getting the damn spec. of the damn gear bearing, software, patent, you name it ^^
if you only have one source of information you will tend to buy anything they sell.
The dirty commies are terrified the people will wake up one day and realise they have been robbed....but not by the dirty foreigners.
To piss us off to the extent that we'll piss off.
They've got the populace satisfactorily distracted and their only worry is the bloody bastard weiguoren.
And I'll tell ya what, Rob.....I'm hovering on the edge. Fk! I can't even listen to the footy this year!
Arseholes!
