Q: Spitting on the street, why?

A lot of people don't hesitate to spit on the street. It's almost a competition, whereas the loudest and biggest one makes them proud.

I remember during the Olympics, there have been a PSA about it being not civilized or something like that, yet a few years later nothing have changed.

I can't understand why would people to it. It's ok if you really need to, but the huge noises doesn't even make me wanna high-five them.

So why would people repeatedly continue to act uncivilized in public?

Chinese are terrified of germs and sickness.

So they spit to get these bad germs out of their bodies. I mean, most places in China it's dusty and polluted and you probably don't want to be swallowing all of that cack, so I'd say it's best to spit it out.

But no thanks, not in a restaurant or elevator or stairwell or train station. Yuck.

And actually, I DO wanna high five the loud ones! When I hear them do it I look closely to see how big the loogie is. The general rule is this: if it's bigger than a grape, they win a high five. But usually I am disappointed, and just please myself by shouting "ATTA BOY, GET IT ALL OUT!"

It's mad when you spot a super-hot girl crossing the road, hips swaying from side to side, hair blowing in the wind, pert little boobs wibbling, then suddenly 'chokkkkkk... ptooey!' she hocks a massive loogie onto the asphalt. I used to find it disgusting, but now it's mildly arousing.

My answer is not sarcasm, it is reality.  Each country on Earth has his own set of customs that to some visitors may look amuzing, or revolting depending on the individual.  Here, to spit anywhere you have the need to, to blow your nose contents into the air instead of a handkershief, to pick your nose in public, etc, is consider actions normal in nature to them.

So, YOU, as  a Visitor, should either look elsewhere while is done, and try harder instead to get used to it as soon as possible if your plan to stay in China for any period of time.  It is their way of life, and it is not up to 10, 20 or even 100 visitors to change the way for 1.8 billion citizens here.

When I arrived, it also shocked me to see or hear this.  After two years here, I am sort of used to it, and sometimes do not even notice it.  I am sure that they also find some of my ways amizing or repulsive, and yet, to date, no one here has brought anything to my attention as a complain.
