Seriously though it was a shocker watching my childhood hero be killed by some emo. It distracted me from the rest of the film. I had to rewatch it later to see what happened.

No, I was the last person to find out. I should have heeded the spoiler warning.
Ford actually begged Lucas to kill him off in Empire, saying his character didn't really add much to the story, and to show that even important heroes can die. Lucas, obviously, decided not to, because of the romance angle.
I'm sort of glad he did die - for the same sort of reason. So when it happened, I was NOT surprised! (I actually expected it, and if he didn't, I would have been quite disappointed).
BTW - Leia hugging Rey instead of Chewie... Lucas admitted that was a mistake...
