Q: Sports Day.....do you guys participate?

I'm teaching in a uni and tomorrow is their sports day. All foreign teachers have an event which is really like a telematch sort of game. I was wondering those of you who teach in unis join in the fun as well? They usually have a teachers' event just for laughs. If you did, what's your experience like?

I have only been aware of sports day by the absence of most of my students (this applies to my last Uni in the 'wild west') :

when i went to the sports ground i was told that there were races for the teachers - and sure enough there were

the staff didn't bother telling my self or the other FT's about any events for us - there weren't any we could take part in

no

louischuahm:

That's odd, because the uni should not isolate you guys. It just doesn't promote cohesiveness amongst teachers both local and foreign. Sports day is the best time to let down you hair and let go a little steam.

my last uni was rabidly anti-foreigner.

my department president constantly undermined us and as a result, the staff followed suit.

They did everything to make our lives difficult, so having gone through that, i can survive anything surprise

That's crazy. It's like they need you guys to teach but rather not have you there. Talk about contradictions. Good that you left, nothing to gain staying on. Hope the new uni gives you more job satisfaction.

My company had a sports day a few years ago. It was like an olympics ,sooo many events. I raced in the 400m and won gold! I got a medal and 2000 rmb! It was crazy to race in a sports stadium with more than 15000 people cheering us on.

Participate if you can. Definitely an experience.

louischuahm:

Man, we have 6000 students here in this uni. So tomorrow they are all gonna see us fumble, stumble and fall.....all in the name of fun. We've a carnival as well, so the game stalls, candy and popcorn stands will be out in force. Think I'm gonna enjoy this!
