Curious if the number of travelers is really that bad during the main 2 week chunk of the holiday. Curious if people still manage to find nice uncrowded places, or is it more like the National Day holiday with all the mess that was. Local friends have advised me it's more low key since people just go home. So stay here or head elsewhere...?

Personally I have a fork that is part of a set, the rest of which are at home in England. Unfortunately my wife wants it, she finds it attractive, so before she goes and claims it as her own (and in answer to your question) my intention for the Spring Festival holiday is 'to get the fork out of here'. Bwahaha.
The best day to travel is the actual day of spring fest, this time it's 31st January right? Not a soul on the roads or trains. Wonderful!
Rin has a point that there is a quiet period on the actual day, the rest of the days don't expect to be able to move an inch.
the two best options are
1. Do nothing, stay where you are
2. Leave the country.
Going out to EU (my 'cat's home') 20 days before 'Spring'. I'm 'aiming' for 'hard sleeper-mid' train ticket Urumqi - Beijing. I'm not sure, how can I buy/get same ticket in return. I should be able to pick-up my ticket somewhere?? on my return to BJ.
I'm outa here. Back to OZ. Actually I never stay in freezing conditions like this....every Jan/Feb I head for warmer climes.
Palawan (el nido) if I got my choice,,, or maybe hike Pinatubo; afterwards spend some time researching Bataan.
as mentioned above,, it will be the time to get the 'fork' outta Dodge....

Oh, you have a fork too. Well I don't blame you, as cutlery goes it is a fine and most useful thing to own. I take mine every with me, and it's particularly useful when riding the subway. If someone steps on my toe, hey ho, I simply fork them in the arse!

I am all about the knife, fork, chopstix,,,, but still find spoon best for soup..
My pregnant wife and I were on the trains and buses during the spring festival. It was a pretty awesome time. In fact, we had no trouble buying any tickets at all, which is really weird. I wouldn't recommend trying to wait until the last minute for tickets, though.
My recommendation is stay! I absolutely loooooooooooooooooooooooove the spring festival. I love seeing endless waves of zombi— err, people. I love the family gathering stuff, etc. It's just a really groovy time for me.
always too hard to get traintickets... most of the D train tickets are sold within 2 seconds. Really have to be lucky to get one. G train is usually always available but the station is it arrives to is not convinient for me
but yea i stay (again) with the family of my gf. Dunno how long my company have holidays though
got to get out of here. back to fresh air and fresh food
The lead up to Spring Festival travel is tough. During the early part it is pretty easy as most are back at hometown. As far as uncrowded places "most big cities" are ghost towns during SF. My city Suzhou is virtually closed as most restaurants are closed as is just about everything else. Down right depressing.
I was here last year for the Spring Festival and apart from the fireworks which was every couple of hours except for 1 * 24 hour extravaganza - where there was non stop fireworks - It was great. The roads and supermarkets were empty - even the freeway was empty.
With all that - I'll be going home this time - for some less cold weather.
Of course I will get out of china .... Going to Beijing for a visit ...
If I can afford it, I'm getting out. Last year I was stuck and I will say there is something kind of nice about seeing the city that you live in suddenly deserted - though that only last a couple of days and then you are desperate for the people to return.
With the up and coming middle class now you just don't have to flee, you have to flee further than them with Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand all becoming increasing congested with Chinese tourists during Spring Festival. Soon, South Korea and Indonesia will fall, followed by Australia.
am out, I wish I could even be out before December 24, but this is practically impossible, yet am still counting my days to take my flight back home sweet home, too cold here and I am just not used to, neither will I ever get used to cold weather here, in my home country there is no winter
Go back to your home country. Best time to go. Why stay here and deal with all the lines, crowds, caos, and the outrageous price gouging, and all the congested traffic. Plus its usually cheaper to fly during the Jan and Feb months.
Will escape during Spring Festival. Fresh air, summer, gorgeous wilderness, fish, chips, and probably a lot of sheeps ^^
I like the fire works from my apartment in Beihai, Guangxi. I go there every year to watch the live entertainment. Laser shows, fireworks, car accidents, fire started by people in the streets, and the general lawlessness. Boy I love this country. This doesn't happen back in Canada.
Shanghai becomes a bit of a ghost town. I was there and in the district in which I lived in 2011 was full of waidiren who went back to their home provinces. I remember western new year 2011 and it was very quiet. Chinese people already start thinking about CNY well in advance of it happening. I often think they start thinking about it several weeks before it even happens.
I will be staying in China but hope to go back to the UK next summer-maybe will watch the end of the World Cup with my family and friends.
my original plans were to travel leave the country Feb.1 and return Feb.10 ...now, seeing it is Chinese travel time... I am gonna do what I have often preached..stay home when all Chinese are on the road .. I hope to rebook my escape for March and because of the duress this caused, I will make it the whole month of March. Take that you stress causers!!
Going back to Blighty and the wife and kiddie are going to her folk's for the festival. Don't like the thought of being away from the boy for so long (one month) but then I don't so much mind the thought of being away from the responsibility. I'm 100% English but i'm afraid that by the time I get back i'm going to be 90% scotch. Had a friend warn me not to divulge such things as holiday plans on forums such as this as there are people who scan such forums with the soul purpose of finding out information they might use to capitalize on, like robbing someone's house when they're out of town, but looking around this flat I can only say that should someone choose to rob it they'd probably come out with about 15 yuan's worth of swag.
Definitely go back to the Caribbean where it's warm and sunny (My homeland)
