Q: Starting up a small business - how tough?

Anyone have any advice on what kind of reliable small business i can do in Beijing? For instance is there anything i can buy from outside and then sell in Beijing.

Well like any industry you need to do a little research.

What do people want?(demand)
How much can i get and for how much? (supply)
Add a mark up to your supply, sale it and tadam! your in business making a profit

After using this little formula you may find cheap products that people need in Beijing and get it in for a profit.

First rule of business is to understand the "supply and demand" methodology.

May i suggest fake Apple product? Or maybe chiken? im sure KFC needs more Chiken!

Good luck mate! Cool

Fap is totally right! And I would had human resource management is also a key to success! When I first arrived, I thought it was difficult to implement the "work hard, party hard" doctrine. Even now, I have problems with one of the secretary that keeps slacking all the time. Productivity, efficient service, dedication and pride toward their job is the most important part if you want to be succesful.

I encourage all the minions by introducing dancing, and it works well, because I found here in China there is a direct correlation between the lack of dancing and the lack of productivity. When they don't work hard enough, I organize dancing seminars in small groups where they'd practice riverdance and classic movies choreography. After that, their productivity is going up! I also encourage joke telling while working, and funny faces days.

But it's always important to innovate instead of just sitting on your success. Next week, I'll buy funny masks for everyone, because a fun surprise is always welcome at work!

Best luck in your business, shrek2!

It is not tough if you can find trusted factory and good products. The prices are alomst the same level. If you have stable purchasing ability, and good business, find factory here on alibaba or www.gttown.com

Unless you have a strong business plan backed by robust research (as you clearly haven't) I would strongly recommend against it. Trading business in China is ultra competitive and the chance of failure is very high indeed.

Well, as per my own experience it's not that difficult in Taiwan, especially since many people are able to communicate in English here.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
