Q: Students asked to cheat to get into American universities?

One of my high school students came up to me, took me apart and swore me to secrecy (which I'm breaking now).

She was really depressed, on the verge of tears because the school principal called her up and asked her if she would sign a paper agreeing to boost her average scores so that she could get into the American universities she'd applied for.

I currently teach in one of the two top highschools in Shenzhen.

Anyone been subjected to this before? Is it common for schools to do this in order to boost their reputation by boasting about having sent students abroad?

Like everything else in China:

It's fake. The appearance of being (put in term here -strong, powerful, successful, high quality, intelligent) is more important than actually being so.

I know that another popular way for Chinese students to get in to US universities is to hire a native english speaker to write their statement of purpose (part of the application) for them, for money of course (500-600 RMB per).

Maybe this explains why a lot of Chinese students on american universities can't really speak english very well? Laughing out loud

Zootown! I went for a job interview at this Taiwanese company that had an office in Shanghai. The job position I applied for was writer. When I got there I was asked whether I would be able to write personal statements, fake recommendation letters and even essays on behalf of Chinese students, whose parents had obviously paid for this service. What they were doing was completely immoral and I walked out of there dumbstruck that there was actually a company being allowed to legally offer such a service. It was disgusting, people will cash in on anything these days. It makes me sick to the pit of my stomach when everything I achieved at college and university was off my own back and was 100% me. Shame on you!!

Dont foreigners  cheat to get into universities?indecision

crimochina:

seriously, you are comparing teachers telling their students how to cheat, ignoring students cheating with students trying to outsmart a ststem that is put in place to catch cheaters. you're comparing Deans telling teachers to not punish a student caught cheating with fair across the board enforcement of cheating rules??

i've worked at two international schools the answer is yes, this is common. you are a good teacher if all your scores are in the 90s. they dont give a rats ass if the student even showed up, short sighted retarded mind set. they dont think ahead to step 2 or what comes next... your name and reputation will be mudd. schools will ignore applicants from your school. but i guess they feel that there must be millions of foreign schools so they could keep the scam going for 5-10 years. actually not a bad idea if you are a soulless dishonest monster.

crimochina:

not to mention ... your doing a disservice to the students!!!

Not just American universities. The son of some director from the college I work at was writing his statement of purpose to get into Cambridge, if I remember correctly. They asked me to fix it. It was horrendous. I was only given 2 hours right then and there, and I thought it would be rude to refuse. I never heard another word about it, so who knows if it was good enough. But I did go to school for writing, so that should count for something. I wouldn't do it again.

I'm surprised you admitted to this. This makes you part of the problem.

now hold the phone she is not part of any problem. if she refuses , she doesnt know what they'll do. there are a million and one ways a schools can screw you over. this is not her country or ours thye make the rules , sadly there comes a time when we must play by them. in this country adhering to your princples and morals will leave you stranded. like tupac said we were given this worl we didnt make it. and (no offense jnus) she is young and younger people in a far off land are far more easily intimidated. i learned this the hard way, in life you pick your battles carefully.

I certainly wouldn't write one for someone. I think that is very wrong. I edited it, although there were some major edits. I deleted a lot of crap, mostly all the "awesome" awards that he'd gotten that had nothing to do with the course or why he was taking it. I also gave him suggestions on what to add because I deleted over half of what he'd written.

I caught some of my students cheating in the final exams at my former preparatory college with their small cheat notes. I stapled their cheat notes to their final exams & I gave to the principal. Instead of punishing or expelling the students, he just collect 500RMB from the students. The students passed. Everything was fixed.

They can't even write their own essays for their applications. Stop letting them in, there are more qualified students that would love to take their places.

My question is do American universities know that chinese students cheat in the high school scores?

laowaigentleman:

I think they know but they don't care. In New Zealand, we all know that the Chinese students are complete maroons, but they're all in the business school with the boofheads anyway, so we don't care as long as it only drags down that faculty's reputation, which is shit to begin with.
