Q: Sugar in China - Serious health effects for the future?

Inspired by Redaria's coffee question: I've noticed so much sugar in the diet of Chinese people nowadays it's unreal. Not only in coffee, but in normal food, almost every snack on the sweet and so on. Are we going to see a nation of obese people in the next 10 years or so?

How many severely obese do you see in China compared to the rest of the world? Why would you be so concerned??

Hulk:

In some places in China, obesity is really bad. I've seen some places in Hunan where the average woman was obese.

Yes, but it is more likely to be as a result of saturated fats than carbohydrates and sugars. You only have to look at the podgy kids to know there are big issues ahead. Barbecued meat and junk food will be a deadly combination.

Yes, sugar will be a huge problem for them. Look at Mexico. Between all that sugar and little access to anything other than processed foods, they have grown more obese than America. China's still doing fairly well, because for the most part they eat what they've always eaten. But as the quality continues to change, and they increase intake of processed foods, they'll be heading in the same direction as everyone else.

Yes, but it's OK, because America will always be worse than China at everything.

Big part of why I came here ...  southern China ... was the fresh fruits and vegetables ...  but being here, I am amazed at the processed food they buy and eat .....  why eat that packaged sh*t when right next to it is a fresh "whatever"....................  then my wife tells me that it has pesticides .....  somehow I don't think that the pesticide is nearly as bad as the additives in the packaged stuff...  again...  decisions decisions.......  the sugar thing.. I like Bread .... good bread ....  but it seems they have added the dreaded 'white death' to all the flour products.........  just some decent bread please........... no sugar added.

Beware the other 'silent' killer, diabetes.   There could well be an epidemic of type 2 diabetes in the next 10/20 years.   Right now there is no cure because big pharma make more profit out of treating the symptoms.

One look at the younger generation and you see many, many fat kids more and more, while the college age adults and older are skinny and relatively healthy. These children frequent the cheap snack shops, and western-style fast food like McD's and Saizeriya everyday for lunch instead of opting for something lighter like noodles or rice with veggies.  It's definitely going to become a major issue in the coming years, as the trend is more and more sweets and desserts, and bigger portions to match the American sizes of food.
