Q: Summer in beijing, tips for surviving the hot weather?

Last year I was able to run away from Beijing during the summer months, but It looks like I wont be able to do the same this year.

Any tips for dealing with the hot weather in the city?

Stop wining, come down south and enjoy the heat, or turn on the A/C

What's the weirdest feeling in Beijing is when the weather is extremely hot and humid with a thick polluted fog in the middle of the day.
I try to stay as much as possible in cafes or shopping malls that have air conditioning.

I honestly LOVE the hot weather in Beijing!

Yes, I like the contrast of walking into a cool air conditioned establishment or my home but I also enjoy the hot afternoons outside, drinking Chinese beer while munching of street BBQ.

Except for the drinking in public, it reminds me of my home in Puerto Rico.

In answer to your question:

Other than the drink plenty of fluids, wear a hat or  cap , use sunblock and try to remain in cool shaded places with A/C or a fan, there really is not much you can do if you do not enjoy the hot weather.

I get very sad and miserable in cold weather, so being told to "stay indoors, wear lots of clothing and go to places with heat" may not be the answer I would want to hear (just like the one I gave above in regards to warm weather) but there is really not much one can do.

The malls in Beijing, though expensive, are nice and cool (after all you don't need to actually buy anything). spending time there can also be a way to get out of the house, be in a large cool environment and watch people pass by and do their thing.

Honestly, on days like today (clear blue skies, 80 degrees F, light wind), I can't complain...except for the fact that I'm stuck at work right now...

Carry around a bucket of ice and whenever you are feeling the heat just get an ice cube and rub it on your skin for a few minutes. Drink Ice cold water and put the bottle up to your forehead!

....the ways the locals deal with hot weather are

1. Roll up their shirt to about nipple height for better ventilation

2. When leaving air-conditioned facilities always leave the door open in the hopes it will cool down the world (paid for by the bank/restaurant/police station's electricity bill)

Find a 8-10 hour office job where they have air con, take an air conditioned cab everywhere, go home and lock yourself into your air conditioned flat at night - that way you'll barely experience the sauna heat outside. Of course, you will run the risk of getting cabin fever, "air con illness" and depression but at least you won't melt.
