Buying a second hand piece of junk.As a flag carrier for your country, smart move?
Probably not, however, just remember, as is so often the case, it's appearance over substance.
Not in the making..already..it is just the matter of testing..

That's the perception anyway. Having lived here, I believe that its more a matter of western anxiety than of anything that China has accomplished, or can be expected to accomplish.
China does have the second largest navy in the world, the largest belonging to the US. However, only 3 countries have a complete navy that can actually run on the open ocean (UK, France & US) rather than just costal waters.
Though, India, China & S. Korea will probably be the next navys to join the "blue water" crowd.
Will this make China a "Super Power"? A lot of data already says they are on their way to super power status. The big problem with China's military right now is that it is not projectable in any large sense. And their infrastructure is a house of cards built on a rotting foundation.
Basically, I see China a the worlds largest ponzi scheme. Unless they take drastic measures, it will all implode some day.
The only way China is a super power is that they keep a lid on their own 1.3billion people......... that is a super power and it will have to remain their greatest ambition, keep the locals "happy"/under control... good luck!!!!
Sheer numbers would help them take over Africa, Australia and Canada, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
Strong, decisive and reasonable control at home, going to have to be how they exert their super power.
How many can they fit on the carrier? 10-15000? use it to get rid of some people maybe...
TedDBayer:
Load the carrier with women and have them invade my house before the bay freezes, only a few weeks left. I'll put a China flag on my dock as a sign. I like the odds 15,000 to one. How long do you think it will take me to get them to surrender?
In due time my friend in due time.....super powers don't just happen overnight they can take many years to become one. But yes you are right a super power in the making indeed.
crimochina:
funny, the usa became a super power overnight. the same could be said of the soviet union.
Scrap the carrier. They need to renovate the entire country. Stoves, frigs and real toilets for everyone. I'll run for emperor on that platform.
TedDBayer:
I'd go for bath tubs, but that would just be another place to sleep in.
A super power has to have something to offer it's citizens and the world. Something original. The Romans had roads, and took food from Africa to feed Europe. The Greeks had democracy and education. The British had ships, and gave the world a judicial system, amongst many other things. All superpowers have given something to the people and to the world, but eventually corruption took away the superpower status.
China has nothing to give. Instead it just takes, for the benefit of a relative few corrupt officials, leaving most of it's people starving and deprived of rights. It does not even have an effective military like many other countries that are NOT superpowers.
China's 2,200 year history has been one of mild success, followed by decline because of corruption and internal fighting. It is these same elements that will prevent it from ever becoming a superpower.
GuilinRaf:
I agree with most of what you say, except the part of England giving "The World" a judicial system.
They certainly did give a fairly large part of the World a judicial system (Common Law) but quite a few countries follow the Civil Code rather than the Common Law instead: Most of Europe, most of Latin America and even in the US the state of Louisiana and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico are mainly Civil Code rather than Common Law (though some may argue that these are becoming more and more of a "mixed" system).

I really did like that Kitto article. You should have cited it.
kchur:
But But But, that's how my Nana would justify the British Empire, "We made a lot of mistakes, but at least we left India with a bureaucracy." She would say.
TedDBayer:
China has the women to offer. They could rule the world yet.

Matts: It's spelt Kitto, and yes; it was an inspiration and told the truth about China.
Here's a link to Kitto's article, for those interested. Recommended reading:

That's why pencils have erasers. Anyway, fixed. I also noticed that you didn't included what he pointed out as America's contribution to the world in its term as superpower. Did you feel that what he was saying amounted to a type of cultural imperialism through assimilation or a blue print for how a multi-cultural, or at least multi ethnic society might reasonably function?
