Q: Supermarkets. The payment/packing procedure?

Is the following a country wide thing?

In the supermarkets, the chains like Carrefour, Vanguard, Walmart etc. when you go queue up, what happens then?

The thing that strikes me as VERY illogical is that most people, once they have unloaded their cart, will park the cart at the start of the queue (upstream the queue) instead of just rolling it through the checkout point, for easy retrieval by the supermarket staff or even for rolling the shopping bag closer to the exit.

If they actually bring the shopping cart away from the payment are, people park the shopping carts completely random. The other day I saw someone that left a shopping cart in the middle of an access road to the parking lot. Very much in the way of cars driving to and from the parking lot. Had they rolled it all the way to their car, it would not have been obstructing others.

Scandinavian, you have been in China long enough to know that each person in China cares for himself or herself, and does not give a hut (or two bits) about anyone else.  It does happens in just about every aspect of life here, and it is a pity.

Scandinavian:

Sure. It's just very often easier to just do things "the right way". When you've off loaded your stuff, push the cart forward, no people are there, push it backwards and it bumps into the people queuing behind you.

While I do agree 110 % with your comment, where have you seen locals caring about what others feel or think ?. While in many places is "live and let live", here is do as wish or want, and to hell with the rest. If anyone left a shopping cart in a supermarket in my way, instead of complaining, I just push it out of my way. AND IF IT HITS A DISPLAY OR ANOTHER PERSON, I have learned after many years to just continue walking and pay no attention to the complaints.

I agree with almost everything here except for one thing.

It's a trolley and not a cart  :)

Just walk to the cashier, have the exact change in hand and  plop it on the counter. Ignore all those who were foolish enough to wait in line.

If a foreigner says "qin pai dui" or stand in line, make sure to sneer and /or laugh contemptuously at him and walk out with your purchase.

Shopping cart? That is not your problem, just leave it and let "someone else" worry about parking it.
