A couple in Taiwan have decided to adopt a young girl who will be raised as a daughter and sister to their son. As she grows she will be "trained" in how to be a good wife and when old enough the son and adopted daughter will be married. Of course this is to protect the families wealth. We are all aware of arranged marriages, but this reallyy seems like a step too far, how f**cked up will these kids be having been raised as brother and sister then being expected to be lovers and marriage partners..

The writer of that article seemed to like the idea of it. But to me it seems seriously messed up. It might be true that the girl is taken care of well, but still it is basically slavery. Which is why I cant understand why the author is trying to justify it.
That's incest, even if they aren't related. They're brought up as brother and sister, and then suddenly get married and start having sex and making babies? Hell, even the Bible forbids such a thing.
GuilinRaf:
Being raised together is bad enough, but once actual adoption has taken place, they are indeed brother and sister, so yes, it would be incest but only if the girl is adopted (legally speaking). just being raised together would not be enough.
tomcatflyer:
Although she would not legally be his sister if it is not a legal adoption to all intents and purposes she is. They would be raised from a really young age together and the relationship between them would be that of a brother and sister regardless of the paperwork, in their heads they are related.
GuilinRaf:
Yes. That is why I make the distinction between "legally".
Eitehr way, adopted or not, it is rather "icky"....
Arranged marriages are f***** up and a violation of peoples freedom. This is beyond f***** up.
They should have had their son removed, doesn't seem like they are fit to be parents.

Well my dad's older brother's marriage was like that. My uncle deceased several years ago. I don't think I had ever seen him.... His wife is still alive, in his 80s, maybe. What questions would you like to ask? :)
The article is removed? I can't see it.
Chinese word for that is 童养媳. If you must know..... my dad's older brother and his wife were like that. I'm not kidding or lying. Well my dad was in his 50s when I was born. So, my dad's older brother's marriage took place before the found of PRC.
From what I heard, the reason is : In old China time, men outnumbered women a lot. For a poor family, they couldn't afford marrying a grown-up woman. So they adopt a girl as 童养媳 when the girl is still a child.
Well yeah it's illegal now.
I see one problem with this. Either the boy or girl will get tired of one another very quickly and end up devastating the parents. Welcome to the life of dysfunctional families....
