Q: Taxes on food? Shopping? Services?
When you go shopping, or out to eat, or get your hair done, are their taxes you have to pay? If yes, is it one uniform tax, or does it vary by city/province?

yes and no. there is no sales tax like in america. but the store does have to pay taxes based on the amount of money they make. in smaller towns they will try to keep the receipt and give you a cheap gift instead so they could cheat on their taxes, yes it is done openly
Of course there are taxes, but the percentages/amounts are not disclosed to the public. I heard that the luxury tax is outrageous, something like 50%.

I didn't see many luxury goods in China, like perfume. I brought 7 from home for gifts, I read they made good gifts. Big stores had little to offer. The women I met knew nothing about perfumes. I almost wanted to keep the Katy Perry bottle for myself.

when you bring luxury goods in for presents you are supposed to claim them with receipt and pay the duty,, or not
it is different between west and china , in china, most Taxes of products have been count in factorys product's cost, when you buy goods from stores or supermarkets, the price already include tax, and when you pay, the casher won't tell you wich part of goods is real prices and whick part is tax, because they don't know either.
