This happened to a colleague here tonight. You are in a taxi at night. You are the sole passenger. You are sitting in front of the taxi, ostensibly a metered, legitimate taxi. The driver appears to get lost or feigns not understanding you. He then stops to pick up two passengers who get in the back. What will you do? Will you get out? Will you continue on?

It's happened to me a few times, doesn't bother me,and the driver has always gave a little discount
Get the receipt, call the taxi company and ask for a full refund (this might require a Chinese speaking friend) I think the license plate or taxi number will always be on the receipt
I also availed such royal treatment with unidentified unarmed bodyguards in the back seat...and if possible more and more around you to make your journey safe..
whenever i returns from Beijing to Jinan after 8 PM..I never find any legal taxi rather private cars with smoking driver , offering you taxi service ..and so you do not feel lonely..they always arrange some co passengers for you.
The very reason is that High Speed railway station is far from city..
it is common sight here also in Jinan..but in the late evening (after 7 PM) and in the outskirt...
It's accepted practice in this city. The driver needs to make as much money as he can. If I am in a hurry I tell the driver how much I will pay and tell him not to pick up any other passengers. Not any danger to you from other passengers being picked up - more danger from the maniacal driving I say!!
I have never had this happen in the large cities (Shanghai, Nanjing, etc.) but it happens quite frequently in the smaller towns. Honestly, I have benefited from being the second fare especially on rainy days so I try not to complain.
It happens quite a lot, many taxi drivers do this to make more money.
no idea.........my house is five minutes walk from my office and the city is so small i don't even nee a taxi for it.........i can scan the whole city in three hours and a bottle of whiskey
The driver must, before take additional passengers, ask if the first passenger agree/ do not object to accept others. And only with permission of the first passenger he may take others. The reason is - if you pay for a taxi-car, so you are the owner, the chief of it (for some time). May be, you want your travel to keep in secret.
I never met such problems in China and I think Chinese taxi-car service is quite allright.
