Q: Teachers day- what's the crack?
I heard teachers day is coming in a couple of days. What should I expect in China; will I be waited on hand and foot, treated for dinner, brought wine, cigars and salmon?
Last year my International Office invited all the foreign staff for a meeting. We were told how valued teachers are in China, and how much we were valued by our university as foreign guests. they appreciated our input in improving the standard of English and would welcome any suggestions we would have. We all sat there with straight faces, thanking our Chinese colleagues. A lesson in hypocrisy. In all honesty, a few of my harder-working students did wish me a Happy Teachers Day and thanked me for my help (i had known them for a year at that point). I was just happy that they had worked hard in improving their English.
Generally my school didn't bother doing anything for teachers day during the last couple of years. But a few of the newer students (that I had not taught before) wished me a nice teachers day and gave me some flowers. That was pretty much it really. Got some nice flowers out of it though

The kind of bouquet that you can see in all the flower shops. Seems like the tradition for a group of students to give something like that to their teacher.
i usually get about 4 red carnations per class from students. sometimes a bottle of wine.
We've always bring a flowers to teacher, but here, they expect the red envelope.I have already confirmed by my wife. No flowers, here is china :(

In Guilin, I got flowers or some kind of snack.
My first year in Beijing, I got hammered with my (then) boss. Er Guo Tou (what we drank).
My second year, nada.
I am starting my third year in Beijing. Will report if anything.
Expect a day off and just another day in the neighborhood..
Teachers day... A day off? No i had to work Sunday. I got informed by a 3 year old when she said see you Sunday! All Chinese teachers today rehearsing for some song..Who knows what tomorrows hold will find out a few minutes before hand no doubt, maybe i will get a few less classes-here's to hoping.
Surely on teachers day the students should act as semi-slaves. They could wash clothes, clean, make lunch, fan teachers with palm leaves. All things that would make the day a little easier.
My school invited all the teachers to a scenic spot outside of the city for a day trip, BBQ, paintballing and mahjong. Paid for by the school.
Last year half day off, I think the same the year before.

Yep, I lived in a really small city before moving to KM, there was even paint ball there. I'm sure you can find it if you look around, the Chinese call it CS. Be prepared to get your clothes dirty unless you're Chinese sized, the army clothes they provide, won't fit.
Seems the local florist had a busy time yesterday afternoon and this morning. Kids and their parents picking up small buckets of flowers.
