Q: Teachers, how do you get your students to do anything?
In my school, there is no conduct system. If you get in trouble, you can either kick them out of your class, tell the AT who will tell an administrator. The administrator sometimes tells the parents. From what I can tell, none of these actions changes behavior. How do I get kids a proper punishment who deserve it?
As far as doing work....I work at an expensive private school, and these kids know that no matter what they do, they're going to get decent grades. How do I get them to work???
(1) make sure the kids like you at all times.
(2) do your work to the best of your ability.
(3) don't let the idiocy or futility get to you.
(4) avoid challenging others' misconceptions.
(5) expect to be given no respect, then you appreciate what little you do get.
(6) you are a mercenary not a teacher. if they miss a payment, you'll dance for the competition instead.
(7) trust no one. the truth is not out in China. you don't want to believe, trust me. I mean don't trust me.
To be honest, it sounds like you're wasting your time trying, although good for you for still being the responsible teacher and making the effort.
If they're the type of spoiled rich kids I've seen they have their future career mapped out already, the job is ready and waiting for them (and paid for) and they know they don't need to do shit now, so they won't. In fact they probably get more face points by being able to pass with good marks despite never doing anything. It doesn't matter to them that they are learning nothing because it won't matter how useless they are, their job will be secure.
I would focus my attention instead on the kids who are there for an education and want to learn. Do the most you can for them and ignore the others, they're not worth your time and I doubt anyone would appreciate your attempt to help them anyway.

Yep, focus on the kids that actually want to learn and just try to stop the rest from being too much of a pain in your ass. If it's a private school, they're all going to pass anyway so why give yourself the stress. And, yes, I know that's a depressing view to take but TIC.

I teach in a kindergarten,classes are only 20 mins long,The powers that be expect so many wonderful things when it comes to teaching English that its impossible to do.
The kindergarten is not set up for teaching English.I care about the children I teach,but I also dont care,I do what I have to do in the time that is given to me.our children have a very low level of English.
In the morning I teach 1 K3 class,then I teach a Nursery class,then K1 then a parents class with children,then 2 K2 classes all by 11.30 am.
In the afternoon I teach 2 K1 classes then reading classes.
when I leave the class it goes right back into Chinese,the only English the children get is when Iam in class.
dont care so much just have fun and try and enjoy your work.
and another thing no one will ever tell you if your doing a good job unless they want something from you.
I have given 12 years to the same kindergarten and that means nothing.
Why bother? If no one from the principal to the students cares, why should you? I worked 4 years in a row at another expensive "elite" school before starting my own business, because they paid well, at that time I was already totally Chinese when it came to how I perceived my work, I did the very minimum to get by and collect my paycheck. I was chatting and laughing with the students learning nearly nothing during every lessons, I was playing movies and the school kept renewing my contract with pay increase. The students all loved me because my class was fun as hell and I didn't ask them to do anything, I received tons of gifts and hongbao from them and their parents. Your expectations are not theirs, the foreign teacher is not a "real" teacher, he is here to be a sort of older brother, when you understand this your job will become much easier and much less frustrating. At the end I left on my own, they were ready to renew me for a fifth year.
In sum, go along with the flow, if no one cares, do not, the students will pass anyway so you won't get blamed.
I was teaching in a kindergarten before, there was one student who was not behaving, his class teacher also told me many time time that he is a weirdo and crazy, What i did is as below.
i liked to play with students during class and also on ground during 4-5 when they are waiting for bus or parents to pick them. students used to love me so much, but i had a rule who ever do not behave in my class,i do not play with him in class or out of the class and i tell him when i can see you are doing well you will be allowed to play lot of games, he see others playing and happy for few days while sitting alone, from the day 3 he starts mixing up with students and behaving, he became really good student and also the good learner. even he became more interested in English.when i was leaving the teaching for business he was among few others who cried and asked their parents to ask me not to leave.
kids love attention,and many of them do anything to get it. Reverse the Psychology,show them that they will not get attention by those tricks but they will definately get it by being good.
