Q: Teaching at Universities

Without using a recruiter, how would I find opportunities online to teach at a college or university?  All of the ads I see are for private language schools.

On this website (eChinacities) if you search by city, you will find university jobs. I just did it as a test.

The best jobs will not be listed now because it's not the usual season. Wait a month or two, and you will see many more offers as schools begin to look for teachers for the normal school year. If you get a job now, it will probably ask you to begin immediately, which means your contract will also end at this time of the year. If you only plan to come to China for one year, it's no problem. But if you want to come for multiple years, and your contract ends now, you will be stuck finding another job right away or keeping the same job. You will have more options in the future if you get a contract that starts during the normal school year, usually September 1st.

I agree with you that there aren't many college or university jobs. I had an interview at one of the colleges in Beijing and the girl was in a rush because she had to teach a class. That's the only experience I had with a college other than grading essays at New Oriental. At my college back home you could go directly to the school and apply or find out information that way. If you don't want to search online go to the school you are interested in and find out information from the staff at that school. You'll be able to find somebody that has knowledge of any teacher shortages.
A lot of times Universities are looking to fill in a new spot or even start a new program. Good Luck!

Go to their official websites and hunt down the email of the FAO or English department.

you need a chinese friend to help you to find the list of schools that they use to  apply to colleges. identify the city in which you want to work in. then use the website to make a list of the schools and whatever number you may find attached to it. (google chrome works best for this with the translate feature) have your chinese friend contact each school to get the number to the international dept or english dept. (make sure it is a trusted friend thatregards you as a person and not as "my foreign friend" because some people would just by pass what you ask them to do and just do their own thing and try to contact the depts on your behalf or simply ignore some schools because they dont like them) you want to be the person that contacts the intl dept. all your friend is doing is trying to navigate the chaos to find you the number and email. be sure to call first before emailing them, much of the info you will find will be out dated. this worked well for me but make sure the school checks your references after they are clear to hire you. i had a large number of schools call my head teacher and fao, then later on found out from someone higher up that they do not hire black people. being that i not born and raised here, i have concern for others and i do not want them wasting the time of good people. so i later on requested that they verify my references towards the end of the process instead of at the begining.
trust me, it is hard work but rewarding to by pass the recruiters.

one last bit of advice be sure to identify exactly what you are looking for. ask questions at the begining of the process . (i am stupid and tried to be polite at first) do not be surprised if you have to go through over 100 schools

Jnusb416:

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to do that when looking for a job this year.

I don't see the problem!! I will only teach at universities, and there were lots of jobs out there... whether they were where I wanted to be, or at the pay I'd accept - that's a different story!

It's as Jnus said - right now is NOT hiring time, so you won't find many jobs listed - certainly not the legit jobs (well, there will be some, but that's because some teacher has done a runner... and I ask you, why has that happened??) It is possible to find a real legit job right now, but don't get your hopes up. Most of what you see are the month in, month out ads that are there all the time.

The serious advertising starts after May, when all the uni teachers have told their FAO that they're not coming back... or the uni has some idea of how many enrolments they'll get, so will know how many teachers they'll need.

FTR, I was about 2 weeks between sending in an application, and being on a plane! And that was late in the season!!

What I also did last year was.... I knew what cities I preferred to be in, went to the Chinese university ranking website, and went down the list looking for the ones in those cities... found their website, and found an email address for the foreign language school, and sent them an email. Didn't work, but I did it Tongue

All that being said, check your inbox Smile

If you want to look online they do have some positions open to teach at universities but not often. You could try going to the school's website in which you are applying for and submit an online application if they have one. If they don't have one of those you can get the contact number of the employment office at the school and schedule an interview that way. I find one of those once but the interviewer was a teacher very young like early 20's and she had to run off to class. I'm not sure why they wanted to have a busy teacher like that interview and actually there wasn't any interview at all because she had to run off to class since she was late!!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
